The Tracks III
F GIVEN HALF THE CHANCE, ANY B-BOY WORTH HIS NAME-PLATE BELT BUCKLE
will beat into your head the fact that hip-hop is built on the foundation of four elements:
DJing (or turntablism, as it is now known), rapping, breakdancing, and graffiti. In the past
few years that first element, turntablism, has gone from being a forgotten art in the early
nineties to a burgeoning industry unto itself at the onset of the new millennium, complete with
an overflowing crate of battles, mixtapes, Internet chat rooms, magazines, and whole albums
devoted to the manipulation of wax on the wheels of steel. I recently attended a concert in
Chicago, and one of the best parts of the show was when two of the groups Mass
Hysteria and Atmosphere, detoured from the ego-trippin' to give the men behind the
wheels, DJ Precyse and DJ Abilities respectively, some credit. The age-old tradition of the
DJ cut, the song on a hip-hop album that gives the group's resident turntable technician a
chance to shine, has gone the way of airbrushed jackets in recent times, and it was refreshing
to see that Atmosphere had made and actually performed a song of this genre. So in homage
to all the cats that scratch, I'm presenting this month's priority freight as some of the DJ albums
that have crossed my fader in the past year or so, and the mainliner singles as a selection of
what are in my opinion, in no particular order, some of the best DJ cuts of all time. -True 54
PRIORITY FREIGHT H
Kid Koala Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This album is completely hand-cut, and while Kid Koala isn't the most techni
cal DJ in terms of scratches, he does have crates full of ill voice samples and
good ear for pleasing melodies. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is like a laid-back lounge
DJ album, without quite drooping into the dubious distinction of being labeled acid jazz. It's
still got a hip-hop soul. My main complaint is with the title; it trivializes a serious epidemio
disease with a tongue-in-cheek reference.
Handsome Boy Modeling School So...How's Your Girl?
Prince Paul and/or The Automator have been involved with much of the mos
original, envelope-stretching hip-hop to hit your jeep in the past decade or so
when they teamed up to do an album, we were all in store for some ol' next shit
As with any experimentation, some of it works and some doesn't, and this record runs the
gamut from dope straight-up hip-hop-"Once Again (Here to Kick One For You)" featuring
Grand Puba and Sadat X-to smoothed-out singing on "Sunshine" featuring a motley
crew of cats including Sean Lennon and Money Mark. But as might be expected, one of
the best songs is the DJ cut-"Rock 'n' Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This)."
DJ Q-Bert Wave Twisters
This record came out two years ago, but none of the wax build-up that preceded
or followed it in the form of turntablist albums can compete. Q-Bert has been the
reigning king of the scratch since he got into the game, and his album is one of the
only turntablist albums that is technically superior from end to end as well as extremely lis
tenable for the average layperson without resorting to mixing popular songs. And the fac
that the sleeve includes artwork by legendary Bay Area graffiti writer Dugone only adds to
its B-boy credibility.
DJ Spinna Heavy Beats Volume 1
Spinna is one of Rawkus' secret weapons, providing hot remixes for many o
their artists and supplying several vertebrae to the backbone of the group the
PolyRhythm Addicts. This semi-underground release hit stores sometime las
year, and I haven't seen many copies resurface since. If you can find it, it has some smooth
signature Spinna beats and even a couple cameos from people like Rawkus mainstay Talib
Kweli, Apani B Fly Emcee, Thirstin Howl III, and he even found the Missin' Linx and
had them drop some verses.
