Elissa didn't win the girls contest but prob-
ably should have. San Diego's Faye Jaime
was smashing in second place with 50-50s
and feebles down the mid-sized rail. Jaime
Reyes backside tailslid a rail. In general, the
level of skating was considerably higher
than in years past. Alhough, one girl did
smash her face dropping in.
The vert shirt (sleeveless T) made its tri-
umphant return to the world of skate fashion.
Cut the sleeves off and save them for
makeshift hats. Set off by his giant mane of
hair, Chad Fernandez's vert shirt was especially
stunning. Next comeback: the sweatpant!
Ryan Johnson took first with a no-frills high
speed ollie-everything approach. His accept-
ance speech included a very sobering "Jesus
died for all of your sins."
Neither Koston nor McCrank made the finals.
Arto smashed his face and hand after hanging
up on the snowboard jump. Security tried to
regulate his friends as they helped him and got
beat down. I saw a legend of skateboarding kick
a security guard in the neck. It was rather
unnerving. Arto had to have surgery on his hand.
The strong language of Mike Vallely's spoken
word did not sit well with the elderly food
service women at an adjacent sandwich
counter. Later, Mike pulled the bastard plant
(backside boneless to fakie) off the top of the
wallride into a tight quarterpipe. Bonkers.
Bob's new tricks included the 360° backside
ollie to slider fakie and the fakie 540° ollie to
frontside pivot to fakie. Like Hawk once was,
Bob's about 10 years ahead of everybody else.
