Hip-hop reviews from the wrong side...
tttttt PRIORITY FREIGHT
MISSIN' LINX Exhibit A
It must suck for Al"Tariq, Problemz, and Black Attack to have found an
incredible loop, lyrically torn it a new asshole, gotten a little bit of under-
ground fame, and then have to sit back and watch as a major-label "artist"
with MTV juice takes the same loop and gets paid ridiculously off it. Arguably,
"M.I.A.," with the beat that Dre jacked for "The Next Episode," is still, two
years after it came out as a single, the hottest joint on this new EP from
Missin' Linx. But over the past few years these three cats have proven that
you're not gonna be too disappointed with anything they put out. --True 54
INFESTICONS Gun Hill Road
I
Flipping through the CDs my man sent me to review this month, I came
upon the Infesticons' Gun Hill Road. I read the back of the CD card and I
have to admit, a concept album about the century-old struggle between
"jiggyness and the essence of the regular cat," "Infesticons," "Majesticons,"
"Poof Na Na," and robots trying to jiggify the five boroughs-let's just say
gave up Dungeons & Dragons about 15 years ago and wasn't dying to hear
the hip-hop version. When I finally did put this record in the system, I was
surprised to find that it's tight as hell! This is a concept album with each
song having its own theme: "Hero Theme," "Chase Theme," "Church
Theme, yeah, I know it sounds corny. But Mike Ladd and company drop
serious lyrics about the real world as well as the metaphorical, the produc-
tion is straight-up creative and head-nodding, and you'll be singing in the
shower to some of the chanted choruses. "God Bless the Infesticons... Fuck
the Majesticons!"-Dlema
2001 A Rhyme Odyssey
You've probably already heard most of the songs on this compilation from
Chicago-based Guidance Recordings, but you may not have known where
to find them. Most of the cuts are mellow bangers that flew just under the
radar of your radio the past year or two, like "Hidden Crate" by the Giant
(AKA AG) or "Mental Void" by Primeridian, but there are also some older
gems hidden in there, like the "Soul by the Pound" Thump Mix from
Common's pre-NYC days. If you're looking to recreate the feeling of a col-
lege radio hip-hop show, this CD makes the grade. -True 54
THE UNBOUND PROJECT Volume One
This is a compilation album of 16 tracks of underground hip-hop all ded-
icated to spreading consciousness of the case of Mumia Abu Jamal (a death
row inmate accused and convicted of killing a cop). Artists include Talib
Kweli and Hi Tek, Ursula Rucker, Aceyalone, Blackalicious, Poor Righteous
Teachers, and many others who were asked to record a song with the theme
of "freedom." Yeah, this shit is political, and I'm not really tryin' to hear
some self-righteous muthafucker preach to me, but this album is able to
shine in the more personal moments of cuts like "The Human Element,"
"Soul in Flesh," and the spoken-word piece "Soon." I sat down with this CD
on my lunch break, and although I did have to hit the skip button a few
times, it generally gave me a deep meditation. -Dlema
YOUNG BLEED My Own
I consider myself pretty open-minded musically, but I resisted the rap
bubblin' up from the southern states for a long time. Call me a hater, call me
a backpacker purist-just don't call me late for Young Bleed's new album.
His drawl is deeper than the Louisiana Bayou and he's as gangsta as they
come, but his beats are bangin' and he's got that just-don't-give-a-fuck atti-
tude that makes me wanna ride for my players in the Dirty South.-True 54
