the biggest problems that even
the most seasoned traveler must
contend with is the language bar-

they would speak straightforward,
normal English, but they are for-
eigners, after all. So, I've pre-

important words and phrases that
they've bastardized.

MARK BAINES
Where are you from?
Sheffield; it's two and a half
hours north of London.
How often do you come
down here?
Probably two times a month-
I come here to film. I stay with
Paul Shier.
Is there beef between the
North and South in England, like there is in California?
There is a bit, actually. They always take the neck out
of me for being from up north, because they think
everyone from up north is all thick, they're dumb, stuff
like that. But it's not so bad; it's like the East, and West
in America.
How long ago did you move back here from the States?
About five months ago. I was out there for about a year
and a half.
Why did you come back?
I hurt my knee, but I couldn't really do anything about
it because it costs so much money. So I just came back. I
got back on Blueprint, and I had to come back and film
for the video.
Were you on Blueprint before you went to America?
Yeah, I had a board. Then I went out there, rode for New
Deal, then came back, and I'm on Blueprint again.
How did they feel about that? Were they mad or did
they take you back right away?
They were cool about it, actually; it was good. When I left
they were pissed off, but we talked it over and everything's
cool now.
What's your favorite spot in London?
There's loads of stuff around St. Paul's Cathedral. You can
just skate around and find spots wherever. There are spots
everywhere; you just have to look around. There are so
many that are undiscovered.
Skating in the US vs. England-which do you prefer?
America has better spots, and it's got the weather,
obviously. But sometimes it's quite fun to skate some-
thing that's not perfect, like if the run-up's sketchy or
whatever. But only sometimes.
People use a lot more wax out here, don't they?
Definitely; the blocks and surfaces are a lot rougher.
Do you have any stories from when you lived at the
Warner house?
Probably all the Boulala ones. I used to wake up on
the couch across from his bed and see him drinking
beer in the morning, and then he'd just go to the sink
and throw up.
What happened to him?
He's in Sweden now; he got deported or something. I've lost
touch with him, but I'm sure he's off boozing somewhere.
What's your secret on the fruit machines?
I don't know; it takes a while and a lot of money. I've lost a
lot of money on them. One day I lost over a hundred pounds,
and that's quite a lot because they're like 25 pence a go. That's
like 50 cents or something.
What's the story on Shipman?
He's stuck in Worksop, a little town; he just chills with his
wife and kids, and drinks, and plays fruit machines.
