are over eight large skateparks in the
Northern Illinois area. One of the
biggest and best is a new park that
I was just built in Mundelein. With
design input and some construction
done by none other than Tim Payne,
this park rocks! With 20,000 square
feet of skateable area, the park is

bowl that's absolutely killer, a five-
and-a-half-foot mini with seven-
foot extension, a three-and-a-half-
foot micro-mini that's super fun, and
a gigantic street course that has a
great launch box, quarterpipes, ollie
bump, bank to wallride, multiple
rails, and multiple boxes, some of
which are movable. Overall, the park
flows really well and the lines are
endless. The name of the park is
"Ramp, Rail, and Roll," or Triple R
Skatepark. Located in a huge ware-
house, the park will also host con-
tests and will have a complete skate
shop on the premises. Pads and a
helmet may
be required,
so bring 'em
just in case.

I'm a skater locked up in a
California juvenile home. During
one of my visits, my parents
brought me the new Thrasher mag.
This is the first look at skating I've
seen in a long time. It brightened up
my day to see the pictures and to
read the articles. However, when I
read Mail Drop, I was saddened.
What has gone wrong with the new
generation of skaters in this coun-
try? When did every young skater's
ambitions turn from having fun to

going pro? What ever happened to
soul skating? When I started skating
at age 12 in '92, the only thing I
cared about was riding the board. I
never even tried tricks for a whole
year. I was too caught up in my love
for carving the concrete. Now all I
read about is young kids asking how
to go pro and bragging about their
best nollie trick. If you are regular-
footed when you start skating, but
you force yourself to do "switch"
tricks, then that's just as difficult at
that point as doing regular tricks.
All switch means in the beginning
stage is that kids are so caught up in
trying to impress people that
they're teaching themselves tricks
the wrong way. The whole skate cul-
ture has lost sight of what matters.
It's not important if it's switch or
regular, just if it flows and it's fun.
Kids need to learn the fundamentals
of enjoying what they're doing
before they try to get all technical
and lose sight of the point of
skating: fun.
