Not so many years ago, the city built
the skaters of Philadelphia a park in
an attempt to get skateboarders out
of the downtown area. The park
sucked. The set-up was boring and
sketchy. It was far from the city and
wasn't worth the train ride to get
there, so nobody ever went near the
place. Then, in the DIY spirit that
runs deep in Philadelphia's skate-
board community, a few guys took it
upon themselves to finish what the
city had started. Today, they're still
at it. Ben Krahn, backside noseblunt,
FDR park.

It's a rare sight to see someone running
through the streets of Philadelphia
with a skateboard who isn't getting
chased by the police. Mike Manidis,
