Clockwise from top left: This construction site is a perfect spot to
sight JP Jadeed backside flipping over horses. John White assaults the
Pepper pool with a melon into the deep end. Salba demonstrates
Plato's allegory of shadows on the wall. When he's not waxing the
string of his yo-yo, you might find Al Losi snatching tailgrabs over the
hip at the Brickyard.
Mondo and J Stevenson, and the list goes on.
The IE Click has produced four videos: Street
Fighter, How To Pick Up Tricks, Shaolin, and
Slipping Into Darkness. The last video was
released in November 1996, so the IE Click is
well overdue for another. One is in the works,
however, and is scheduled, to be released in
summer 2000.
Speaking of year-2000 releases, Active Ride
Shop is planning a video featuring Quinn
Montgomery, Kanten Russell, Kenny
Anderson, Daewon Song. Daniel Castillo,
Richard Mulder, Daniel LeBron and the
Spanyards, Forrest Kirby, Steve Berra, Adrian
Lopez, Joey Brazinski, JP Jadeed, and the
whole Active team. Active is worth mentioning
because they have had a heavy impact on the
skate scene in the IE. They're known for
hooking up good customers and have provid-
ed a lot of opportunity for the skaters in this
area who are determined to be recognized.
They have stores throughout the IE in San
Dimas, Temecula, Chino, and Cucamonga.
Cucamonga... no, it wasn't just a joke in the
second grade. It actually exists in the Inland
Empire and is one of the few cities in Southern
California that's retained its Native American
name. According to some historians, the word
probably means "sandy place," but today it's
associated with wine and suburban living. It is
home to California's oldest winery and is a utopian
vision of modern suburbia-there is little to skate due to
the efficiency of law enforcement. In the late eighties it
I was home to Skate Jams, which was a rebellious attempt
by Marcus Solomon, owner of the late Blast Skateboards,
to persuade the city to build a skatepark in the area. His
dream was successful some years later, with the continued
help of Active.
Most cities around here provide something to skate, but
what makes this place interesting is the diversity of the
skaters. From slashdogs to T-dogs, the IE's got it all. As the
trends of skateboarding come and go, there is one thing that
stays the same: the addiction which possesses people to push
themselves to succeed or get wrecked. Old-schoolers skate
right alongside today's new talent. The rivalry is usually kept
to a minimum, but sometimes it rears its ugly head in one
form or another.
For the most part, skaters in the IE respect different
attitudes about the sport. Street skaters respect pool.
skaters because they know what they do is gnarly. Pool
skaters respect street skaters because they know that
inconsistency just means it's a hard trick to pull. All
skaters are pretty cool around the IE, so if you want to
check out the skating here, cruise on out. You just might
not want to do it during the summer.
