ONS OF SKATERS CAME FROM AROUND THE BAY TO EITHER ENTER, SKATE,
or watch the skate demo/am contest at the Alameda skatepark across the bay from San
Francisco. Although the Adidas team was there in full force, only Jahmal Williams and
Mark Gonzales gave much of a show. Don't think it was a total bummer, though-the
skaters had fun during the chaotic demolition derby free-skate, and the contest was kept
evenly-paced with younger and older kids alternating runs. The rippers who stood out were:
Lennie Kirk, who arose from the crowd to frontside flip the pyramid that many struggled to
ollie; Onio Thompkins, who won the contest with a well-choreographed run; Tony Manfre, who also
won with lazy grace; and a five-year-old wünderkind who barged a run in the middle of the contest.
