DUSTY ROADS
The 25th anniversary of People's Park in
Berkeley, California led to a demo of mag-
nanimous magnitude. Amongst the naked
dancers, jugglers, and Free-Mumia protest-
ers, the skaters seen in the mix and ripping
the freshly-built ramps were some of the best
in the business: Chris Senn and son
Anakin, Judd Hertzler, Tony Trujillo,
John Cardiel, Julien Stranger, Ed
Templeton, Jesse and Richard Paez,
Brian Anderson, Brad Staba, Wade
Speyer, Dustin Dollin, JR Neves, Joe
Sierro, Jim Greco, Erik Ellington, Kenny
Reed, Matt Pailes, Salman Agah,
Gershon Mosely, Mark Gonzales, Chris
Pastras, Aric Hondel, and Max Schaaf

with Onio and Clem. The sun was out and the
ramps were downhill. Somewhere in the middle of
it all, Staba almost got socked by an intoxicated
Greco, and the world was looking up in the sky for
Jamie Thomas, who was somewhere just waiting
for the right roof to implode off.
Mike Daher has been added to Supernaut's
pro team.
Also down in SD, Illennium Skateboards has
emerged with a squad consisting of Sam Hitz, Al
Partanen, Troy "Dirty Aussie" O'Mahoney,
Eddy Alioto, and Olu from Minneapolis. They
promise to be "rawdog soldiers of the new millen-
nium." Can't argue with that.
SIDE BURNS
Joe Pino and a renegade crew of concrete
enthusiasts are rumored to have broken all SoCal
rules of work ethic and have poured some concrete
obstacles under a downtown SD bridge. Although
gold chains are acceptable, the management
requests that all boom boxes be left at home.
In a surprise move, Andrew Reynolds and
Brian Sumner have moved off Warner Ave and
have adopted a no-freeloader policy that has

Carl Ekstrom, the reclusive patent holder for the
asymmetrical surf, skate, and snowboards, is
rumored to be deep into the R&D process for the
creation of a portable surfable wave machine. The
giant undertaking is being assembled in a 230,000
square foot facility near New Branfells, Texas with
the assistance of Jeff Henry. This said to be
million project is being underwritten by Swatch.
Previous Swatch promos included the Mutt
Mullen tour, the Per Welinder fashion show, and
the Mercedes-built eco-smartcar. The plan at work
here that Swatch will now be able to import the
surf along with the turf to a demo at a store/mall
near you. Also working on this first-for-the-ages
deal is Tom Lochtefelt, the scion of Wave Loch, a
company that has created 18 standing wave gener-
ation units worldwide. Private testing sessions on
the 25 mile per hour Loch near Vista, California
have drawn numerous notables as of late, such as
Tony Hawk, Chris Miller, Joey Tourtelou, and
Takuji Masuda. More disturbing undercover tub-
ing has been alleged to take place after hours in
Texas. There a certain top hand has taken to riding

he and brother Nick found a

Joey's been hiding out at the

Tershay has been busted in
the act of building longboards.

Brian Patch's telling of the
truth as he sees it was pur-
portedly the subject of a
hush-hush publisher's inter-
company diatribe at a large skateworld conglomer-
ate magazine. It seems that the Clockwork brain's
well-known views in reference to the built in-biases
of pubs created havoc throughout the corporation.
The missive that offended involved sentiments
along the lines of: It isn't about payola, but the
mags are a two-way street where vested interests
control things. If your sponsor doesn't advertise
then you don't get coverage. It's about business.
Perhaps Patch and Clockwork may yet prevail with
a uniquely rising team that includes Sergie.

Beach. This was the fourth such unannounced con-
test at the clandestine spot, and Jeff Grosso
seemed to win out over Salba, Remy Stratton,
Mark Partain, and Dave Ruel. But how can you
judge or label skating that advanced and varied?
Completely differing lines and styles were the stan-
dard commonality. Everyone present rated it epic
and many made note that the standing room only
audience and bulging field of competitors blew
away some recent "official" contests. Even the
HBPD rolled by, but they seemed fixated on finding
Ali Boulala, Andrew Reynolds, and Dustin Dollin,
or any of the ousted Pissdrunx who the same cops
drove off from Warner Ave.
Old school tributes are a dime a dozen, but how
much do

still getting ripped off?
Salbaland tours are deploying constantly, led by
Salba himself. Recent participants include Julien
Stranger, Arco, Nick Hendersen, Kelly Bellmar,
and Richard Paez. Each is sworn to secrecy about
locations near and dear to the lord's heart. In fact,
Steve Alba is so worried
that people will figure
out that there are some-

Quim Cardona, Matt Beach, Adam Luxford,

Australia, where they force-fed Lance Mountain

not agree with Mountain, who returned to his

as a distance swimmer. Unfortunately the swim-
ming didn't work for Lance all that well either, and
he ended up with a back injury. The doctors then
suggested he take up skateboarding.
