Does anyone ever call you "the Gonz"?
No. That's just for the legend.
What do you want to be doing in ten years?
Just be laid up in a fat house with a beautiful wife
and a nice car.
Does pro skating have too short of a life span?
It depends on when you get into it. I turned pro
kind of late, I guess. Some guys know the right peo-
ple and get hooked up when they're sixteen. It just
depends on the person.
How did you get hooked up?
I owe it to Steve Saiz, because he's from Long
Beach. I used to see him around and he started
giving me things. Then he went to Shaftwood so
I started getting stuff from there. I just did
whatever he did, so he really helped me get my
foot in the door.
Did you freak out the first time you saw a
board with your name on it?
That's a weird question because I don't think it's
registered yet. I first saw it when it came to my
house-I opened up the box and was like, "Oh, this
is the Gonzalez board." Like there was some other
dude named Gonzalez and that was his board. I
couldn't relate to it. It wasn't me. I still don't relate
it to me. It's someone else's board. I just ride it.
If you could only do one trick, what
would it be?
Probably 360 flips-over anything. Because it's
kind of a tech trick, but you can go big with it too.
And it's cool no matter what.
Do you wish all these skaters who came to California
from other places would just go back where they came
from?
Nah. I've met cool people who've come from all over-
England, Australia, Kentucky, Texas. It doesn't matter.
What makes you really mad?
Nothing, really. I'm kind of a mellow dude.
Who are your favorite pros?
Just the guys I grew up watching skate. The Gonz, Vallely,
and Tony Hawk, of course.
Have you ever experienced what recovering alcoholics
call a moment of clarity?
I don't even know what that means.
It's a point in time where everything becomes clear.
When I eat mushrooms I have those all the time.
Moments of clarity?
The world all makes sense to me.
OK, Rob, thank the people.
Thanks to Gary and Steve and everyone at
New Deal, Vinnie and Dustin and everyone
at Kastel, Drawls, all my boys at Furnace,
my girlfriend Launa and my family.
