HAT'S ONE THING
YOU like as much as
skating?
One thing I like as much?
Damn. Watching basketball-
the Lakers. We just got
Rodman. I never used to like
him before, when he was on the
other team. But since we got him,
I'm pretty hyped. I've been to a
couple of games, but it's pretty
expensive to get good seats, so I
mostly check it out on TV.
How old are you?
22.
And where are you from?
Long Beach, California.
Born and raised?
Born and raised.
Who are your sponsors?
New Deal, Kastel, Drawls, and Furnace.
No truck sponsor?
Nope, but I ride Indys. That's the truck, dude.
How long have you been skating?
Probably eight or nine years. Since junior high.
What era did you come in on?
Nine years ago. Around the Public Domain
video. Ban This. All those early Powell videos.
Some H-Street videos.
What was your first set-up?
I had a Hosoi hammerhead, those Trackers
with the copers that hooked onto your truck,
and some Crossbones.
First trick?
Probably an ollie. It took
me a few days, in the back-
yard. Finally I got it, so then
I moved on.
So you've been skating
with the same people since
the beginning?
Yeah, pretty much. All the people I grew up
with still skate today and most of them are pro
or sponsored, like Danny Montoya. Everyone is
in Long Beach and around here.
I know everyone's into tricking out their
cars around here. What's your car like?
My car's called the Silky Sentra. It's an '84
Nissan Sentra, primer gray. It bones out. I like
to rev it up at stoplights.
How much did it cost?
It's a hand-me-down from my mom. She
probably paid eight or nine hundred for it.
I've been saving my paychecks, though, so I
can be cool and have a lowered car.
You could just trick out the Sentra.
don't know, man. It gets me
where I want to go.
Is Long Beach a rough place
to live?
My neighborhood wasn't too rough.
But all my friends from junior high
lived in pretty tough neighborhoods and
did all of that stuff. We went tagging.
What was your tag name?
Yes One.
Were you ever a victim of street crime?
One time I was walking home from my
friend Mark Nisbet's house and I was walk-
ing by these railroad tracks. I had to cross
them to get to my house, and these two
Samoan guys came around the corner-they
roughed me up and took my shirt and shoes.
They took your shirt?
And my shoes and my board. I had to walk
home barefooted in just shorts. I felt pretty
stupid crossing streets.
