notes from
the underground
I went to my first real hip-hop.
show the other night and by
most respects I thought I would
have fun. Kool Keith was
headlining and since everything I'd
heard thus far from this guy was
light years beyond most other
stuff, I figured it might even be
worth the steep 15-buck entry fee
to check him out. Thinking back
now, I should have paid attention
to the ominous feeling I had as I
handed the precious five and ten
spots to the doorman and instead
just gone and spent it on dinner or
something. Once I got inside I
knew it was a big mistake on my
and listen to my neighbor's Kool
Keith albums instead...There are
only four members in the Civic
Minded Five. I don't know what
happened to the other guy in the
band or even if there ever was
another guy, but I do know that
they are terrors on the small stage.
These Las Vegans stand as anoth-
er reason why my lifelong hatred
of the City of Sin is slowly begin-
ning to wane. I saw 'em play at the
fabulous PCH club one night
where they roared through a set
that sounded a lot like FYP circa
1993-94. I also got ahold of a
demo tape that they share with
CIVIC MINDED FIVE
part. The place was too posh, the
beers cost six bucks, and the first
band made me want to just cry out
in despair. The Ugly Ducklings
were way better than those first
guys, but if anything, they proved
that a good hip-hop band on tape
usually ain't much on stage. By the
time Kool Keith got on stage, I was
so tired of urban culture that I was
thinking of buying a farm. But shit,
at least his set was exciting. Ice-T
came out with Keith and that was
pretty cool in itself. I kept wanting
to shout, "Play some Body
Count!" or "Cop Killa!"," but I
thought the old man might kick me
in the head or something if I did.
Keith and the other fellas on stage
had it together though, mixing
funny sex rhymes with plastic bags
of fried chicken (?) that they were
throwing out into the crowd. If I
had been real liquored up and if I
had caught one of those chicken
bags, then this show might have
been worth ten bucks, maybe. I
think next time I'll just stay home
102 THRASHER
another Vegas band, Cobra vs.
Mongoose. While the sound qual-
ity isn't anything to write home
about, the Civic Minded side of
this tape put out by LV-based
Manatee Records is worth its
weight in pure Nevada silver.

now on Lookout! is the new 7" by
The
Criminals called The
Morning After. It's a picture disc
and with that title, God knows
what the picture may be. These
retards just finished up a US tour
thing recently and it seems they
have themselves a new drummer
amongst them. I saw them play
down near Disneyland a couple of
weeks ago and that guy really
knows how to smack the skins. I
forget his name, but in his black
jumpsuit he kinda reminded me
of Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy.
Out of all the band members, he
definitely looks the most like a
true criminal. Andy Harris

DALEK
Newark, New Jersey, the brick city, pioneered the art of carjacking
in the late '80s. For years it was the undisputed capital of grand theft
auto, inspiring such maneuvers as ramming oncoming police vehicles
in order to activate their airbags and incapacitate them. Dälek thrives
on innovation and cultural advancement. Product of a forward-think-
ing city. Jay Garrett
Dälek: The shit we do maybe isn't traditional or whatever, but it's defi-
nitely still hip-hop. We're just lookin' at expanding. Hip-hop's been around
for what? Twenty-something years, longer than that really, but twenty-
something on the books, and it seems like we've reached this plateau and
everybody's afraid to take that step off the edge.
Octopus: It used to be hip-hop had no rules and now it's like nobody
wants to break the rulebook. But there shouldn't even be rules, you know.
It's a fallacy there's no rules for hip-hop. A lot of these guys up there are
just doing karaoke.
D: The thing is, everybody talks about, "Yeah, you know but they're mak-
ing money though," and granted, that's true. I ain't takin' that away from
nobody. It's the business sense of it. You got to give respect to brothers
for the fact that they've taken rap music into this worldwide thing. And
God bless them for that, but the thing about it is that hip-hop is not about
money, man. It's never been about money. If what I wanted to do was
make money, I would still be on the corners, you know what I mean? I
could be makin' mad loot if that's what it's about, but that's not what it's
about, and that's not what I'm about. What I'm about is expressing myself
through music and my lyrics. I consider myself a poet; what I'm doing is
expressing myself. I'm not writing rhymes for anybody else. When people
take something from my shit and they're like, "Yo, I was feelin' that when
you said that," I love that. That's a wonderful feeling because I'm like,
damn, somebody took my emotions and they took something out of that
for themselves, and that's wonderful. But hip-hop is all about self-expres-
sion, man. Like my man in the streets is breakin', he's doin' his thing,
expressin' himself to this music, man. What you have now is what I see
as this self-cannibalistic nature of hip-hop, Eke hip-hop is feeding off itself.
New kids are sampling KRS-ONE. How long can that last? A record will be
out like six months and someone's gonna sample that joint. It's like, how
can you sample hip-hop? The originators of hip-hop weren't concerned
with "Let me see what this kid's doin', so let me sample off the same shit
that they doin'." They wasn't like, "Oh, I ain't gonna listen to nothing unless
it's hip-hop," because it couldn't be like that. Hip-hop heads that were cre-
ating it were listening to everything but hip-hop.
0: There wasn't no hip-hop. That's the whole thing.
D: I don't understand why it stopped. Now it's like kids in hip-hop listen to
hip-hop and sample hip-hop, so how long can that last? That's like geno-
cide, yo. They're like killin' off the culture. Ain't gonna be nothin' left.
Dälek is on Gern Blandstein Records, PO Box 356, River Edge, NJ
07661, and will be touring the US and Europe soon. EP Negro Necro
Nekros out now. LP release October 28th.
