            FURY 66
I first saw Santa Cruz's Fury 66 at the Berkeley Square in October 1994.
Even as openers, they stole the show-bouncing around the stage, switch-
ing from blitzspeed progressions into heavy breakdowns-it seemed effort-
less but you could tell that this band was at work. Four Octobers later, I
piled into the van outside of Gilman with Joe, Micky, Rye, Jeff, and
Joefish to talk about broken TVs, skateboarding, and Highway 17.
RH: What's the name of your van?
Joe: Fury 66. Oh, the name of the van? It's the
Titanic.
Rye: It's the Love Bus now.
Joe: We got tagged.
Joefish: Someone tagged the word "Love" on
the outside of my window.
How did you come across this fine piece
of machinery?
J: We had just finished recording the album,
and we needed a new van for touring. I found it.
pretty much right next to our house, in Salinas.
Micky: A Mariachi band owned it before we
acquired it. So it's got musical history.
What other bands have TV/VCR set ups in
their vans?
J: Good Riddance.
M: Lots of bands have TVs and VCRs.
J: We call the TV the Broke-Sonic because it
broke. I took it in to get fixed but they didn't have
the parts, so they gave us a whole new one. It's
awesome though. It's got a lightning bolt so you
can't go wrong. AC/DC.
M: And it says Broke/Sonic on it.
Even though you've had a lot of songs
come out on compilations and 7"s, it was
nearly three years between albums. What
took so long for the sophomore release?
M: Trying to find a steady drummer.
We almost recorded with one lineup right.
after Russ from Good Riddance and Rich left the
band, but I'm really glad we didn't. We just kept
getting new members, plus the drummer situa-
tion was a big hassle.
As opposed to the first album, your sound
now seems to be a bit slower, heavier, and
melodic. Was this a conscious change?
J: Not even conscious. Whatever we feel like
playing, we're going to play.
M: I saw it as
saw it as a perfectly natural change. When
Jeff got in the band, he asked us what direction
we wanted to go in. I said basically, if it sounds
good, let's play it. I don't really care if it's more
hardcore than others, or if it's more melodic than
others. If we like it, let's play it. It was something
that just happened.
"We're all incredibly handsome guys."

How did your album being on Sessions Records
come about?
J: We did a 7" with them-they were just doing 7"s
at first-and Clifford kept asking us to do a full length.
That's when Joefish first got in the band and Jeff had
been in the band for a couple months prior to that. We
wanted to do an album and we had some material, but
we were kind of reluctant at first because we were
searching for something bigger, or...
M:
:Something more established. They had a lot of
luck with the 7"s. They hadn't put a ton of effort into
it; it went really easily as far as getting rid of them.
They had done 7"s with a lot of other bands-big
bands, like the Descendents. It was time to do a big
project with a smaller band. We've known Joel and
Clifford for a long time.
Does everyone in the band skate?
everyo
J: I haven't in a long time, but I used to skate a lot.
M: I used skateboard every single day and never
have I failed so miserably at something. I broke
bones, I wasn't a puss, I tried and tried; never have I
put so much effort into something to get so shitty at.
But I definitely had a fucking great time. If you grow
up in Santa Cruz, you don't really have a choice.
You're going to wind up with a skateboard at one
point or another.
It seems that most small towns in Northern
California, Santa Cruz included, have a very
strong scene built around skateboarding and
punk rock together. When it comes to punk and
skating, most people view Santa Cruz as...
M: An island. Santa Cruz is-not for long-one of
the last remaining surf towns on the California Coast.
You come from murky, dark-ass San Jose, over the
mountains, and down into Santa Cruz where it's a sep-
arate, isolated entity. Away from all the other mess.
JF: Coming from
from Southern California, I can say that
skating and punk is exploited a lot more to be the cool
thing, whereas in Santa Cruz, it's just what people do.
It's their way of life.
Some people classify you as a straightedge
band, whatever that means.
J: I'm sober, and I hesitate to claim straightedge
because it's turned into something that I don't want to
be a part of.
Do you bring your views on this into the lyrics,
or do you try to stay away from it?
J: I wouldn't bring it in as preachy. No way. I don't
want to
to bag on it because it is such a positive thing,
but sometimes it seems to get all turned around. It
used to be not a straightedge show or hardcore
show or a punk rock show; people would just come
to have fun. We're all here for the same reason: to
get out of ourselves.
How do you react to kids who feel you do need
to preach soberness in your lyrics?
J: I tell them, "That's great. You're sober. Awesome.
Put Xs on your hands and show people that you're
doing something positive, especially in this scene."
Punk rock and drinking go hand in hand. When I quit
drinking and doing drugs, I was like, "Fuck. I'm not
going to be able to do anything. My life's going to be
so boring." Then I found out about straightedge and
realized I could still be a part of something and still go
to shows, but not segregate myself from the other
people who are at the shows.
Why should every kid listen to Fury 66?
J: Micky Dunnegan.
M: We're all incredibly handsome guys.
J: Most important, you'll feel a sense of unity. No
matter what uniform you wear, if you're a gutter punk
or a hardcore kid, you'll be a part of something bigger
than any of that at a Fury show. -Ryan Henry
