hese guys are the Oozzies. You spell
that with two O's, two Z's, and an I-E-
S. Citing influences like late '70s and
early '80s punk rock and oi, Johnny "Fences"
Dickerson, Mark Mortensen, Bryan Cable,
Dave Holmes, and KT have paid their dues
and made the rounds through several states,
tours, and member changes. Now they're
newly relocated to Oaktown and ready to
knock your socks off.
Where did you guys start and how did all this
come about?
KT: Johnny and I started the band in '96 in
Stockton, and about two months later we had
Dave join. Then we moved to Tacoma and
picked up Bryan. Good guitar player, solid guy.
We went on tour, picked up Mark; he played with
Screw 32 and Samiam and did a little time with
the Gimme Gimmes. Then we moved back to
Oakland and now we're a solid unit. We're ready
to kick some ass.
What's your combined weight?
KT: That would be the equivalent of a
school bus.
Mark: Yeah, a school bus, but every seat's full of
kids. I'm sorry, that was dumb.
You're all pretty big boys.
KT: Yeah, I can shit a pretty big turd.
So now that you're in Oakland and hanging
out here, what are your favorite local bands?
Johnny: I think I speak for all of us when I say
we dig the Working Stiffs a lot, and the Reducers
are a great band. We like Fury 66, One Man Army,
Strychnine, the Barfeeders. All those bands.
What's the band's message? Is there a
message, or is it just for fun?
Johnny: We have lots of different messages, but I
think a main one is how to defy authority that
brings us down and that brings kids down who
want to be different. I sing a lot about being a
social misfit. I sing about religion, politics, prob-
lems that all of us have, friends who aren't with us
anymore. You know, just basic stuff.
I've seen you play a few times, and a song
that always
catches me is
"Swingin' at the
Fences." Do you
want to talk about
that song?
Johnny:
OZZIES
That song's about the early '80s
when I got into punk when I was a kid. And I
remember I used to go out with lots of different
punks, some of whom were pretty wild. There
were people who used to jump us, like Nazis, just
for being different, for being punk. Basically that
song is about the fact that there was a time when
you got your ass kicked for being punk. It's about
having to fight when you don't want to fight.
What of shows do you like to play most
type
and where?
Mark: Anything for anybody.
Dave: Open-minded people, any city USA, all
ages are great. Bar shows are great. It's all in the
caliber of people you deal with.
Johnny: I'd like to do some more skate stuff, like
skate demos.
Dave: Skating goes hand in hand with punk rock.
Always has and always will.
Do you have any records out or are you
recording soon?
KT: We have a couple seven inches out. One is a
split with Monster Truckdriver from Seattle. Then
there's one we did when we first got the band
together. We're about to put some full lengths out,
so hold your breath. They'll be there.
Mark: We're gonna do a full length and then tour
in the springtime. New lineup, new game.
Who's your dream date?
Johnny: I'd have to say Juliette Lewis. No doubt
about it. That woman's got my vote.
Mark: I'd break Ally McBeal in two.
Bryan: Whoever can handle the Bryan cable.
I'm a big white boy, that's for damn sure.
Dave: It's either gotta be
Tiffany, Uma
Thurman, or all-
you-can-eat
Thai food.
KT: We'll
just wait
and see
what happens.
Do you do any cover songs?
Bryan: We do a song by Moist, this old band
from Sacramento. I'd like to do some Pat Benatar
songs, and some Adam and the Ants songs. Really
'80s pop, I guess.
Are there cover songs you'd like to do but
would never admit to?
Johnny: "Dreamweaver." Or maybe some
Buddy Holly.
Bryan: Anything from Sweden. ABBA!
Mark: Juice Newton, man. "Queen of Hearts."
How do you feel about the punk rock
scene nowadays?
Johnny: There are some assholes in the scene for
sure, like the hate-edge people. The ones who run
around and beat other people up because they like
to smoke cigarettes or drink beer. They shouldn't
be so
so judgmental about what other people do with
their lives.
Mark: I personally don't like the crusty punks
who are pretty much the new-age hippies of
our lives who like metal and don't even really
like punk rock.
Dave: I just don't understand why Rob Halford
decided to stud out his jacket and call himself a
punk rocker.
Got any shout outs?
Johnny: Monster Truckdriver, the Piss Drunks,
the Barfeeders they've all been really good
friends and helped us out. I'd also like to thank the
East Bay Wrecking Crew; they're good bros and
they've helped us out a lot since we've gotten here.
Jim Thiebaud. All the T-town punks back home, all
the old Oakland dogs here. Adeline ramp crew.
Stockton crew. All our friends. -Brian Hood
