t's hard to forget Rich Van Every once you meet him. At six foot three
inches tall he's hard to miss when he whirls through the air on a piece
of fiberglass-covered wood. Rich is lucky to have a fun job; he works as
a cinematographer for Standard Films and gets to travel the world pro-
ducing some of the sickest snowboard footage known to man. From
Alaska to Norway he's carried his 60 pound camera pack documenting
the progression of snowboarding. Last spring at the Squaw Valley pipe,
Rich put down his pack and shut his trap long enough to throw down
some moves on the other side of the camera.
How old are you?
26.
Early years?
Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California.
How long skating and snowboarding?
Skating for 15 years, snowboarding for 6.
All time skate session?
The big train at Happyland with all my bros after the ASR show, one big skate party.
What about snowboarding?
When Jim Rippey and I were standing on top of Mendenhall Towers he told me I was
gonna own it. It was the same line Dave Hatchett did in TB4 after everyone else backed
out. It wasn't even do-able a few years before that.
How did you get into filming?
I also used to go on a lot of family trips and that's when I started taking stills. I took
video production in high school and it was my favorite class. Then I was ready to
leave college and Dave Hatchett invited me up to Tahoe and got me working. I'm
grateful to the Hatchett brothers for everything they have done for me.
What motivates you?
Working with the best athletes definitely. Being challenged to do my best, coming
up with new stuff, getting those moments that really sing.
If you could trade places with any rock star, who would it be and why?
Jimi Hendrix because he was ahead of his time, flamboyant and influential.
