ardwuar the
Human Serviette
has become a
Canadian institution,
much to the chagrin of
politicians and other seri-
ous-minded folk in the
Great White North and
THE
EVAPORATORS
elsewhere. Working as an
interviewer for the college
radio station he DJs for,
he has asked questions of
world leaders such as
Mikhail Gorbachev ("Out
of all the leaders of the
world you have met, who
has the largest pants?")
and Dan Quayle ("Who is
the Prime Minister of
Canada?" Quayle didn't
know). He is also a prolific
writer, occasional surfer,
and definitely a big rock
fan. On top of all this,
Nardwuar is also the
singer of Vancouver, BC's
The Evaporators.

First off, I gotta say
those guys dress in some of
the most fucked up clothes I have
ever seen, with some kind of Canadian
tie-in theme (like toques or maple leaf
sweaters). As the band starts up, Nardwuar
starts his hopped-up-on-Ritalin freakout, jog-
gin' in place, jumping up and down with
that goofy grin on his face, trying to get
the audience into the act by having them
dance along to "Do the Phaser" or get-
ting everyone in the club to hold
hands. Nardwuar is way out.
Formed on
February 20, 1986, the
band also includes David Carswell
(git), John Collins (bass) and Scott Livingstone
(drums). They've put out a few singles, an LP
(United Empire Loyalists) and most recently a split
LP with alter egos Thee Goblins (Nardwuar and
Livingstone on their own, creating some truly
weird "music"). The two LPs are on Nardwuar's
label and both come with a CD version when you
buy the LP (or vice versa, depending on your mind-
set...). The records blend hilarious themes with solid
garage punk and are interspersed with snippets of side-
splitting interviews.
Seeing the band live is a spectacle. The show starts
with a quick Thee Goblins set, followed by a song or two
of Nardwuar's knockoff ska band, Thee Skablins (Thee
Goblins plus horns), and then, after a costume change, out
come The Evaporators.
After a recent show in Seattle, I got
the opportunity to ask Nardwuar a
couple of questions. Full of the most.
insignificant (yet interesting!) trivia,
he goes on and on animatedly on
questions of Canadian rock trivia
and other matters of pride. Far too
long and trite to be reproduced
here, if you want to catch a sample
of Nardwuar's insanity, try his Web
site at www.nardwuar.com.
