Clockwise from left: The Birdman flaps his wings while
"getting piped" on this Andrecht air. After twelve years
of training together daily, Max Schaaf (tail grind) and
Jake Brown (catch vert) really looked good on the vert
canal. One of the more handsome positive Marine role
models! The X-Games are too radical for some people.
for providing a wholesome environment for
some often-overlooked athletes to show off their
talents and abilities. This is just the boost
skateboarding needs to raise it out of the gutter
and into a respectable place among our nation-
al activities. More positive events like the X-
Games could make 'boarding as common and
popular as Rollerblading!

for one particularly "radical" X-Games sponsor,

the Marines (Lord knows all teenagers, espe-
cially ones who shun the traditional sports,
need positive role models and paths to follow!).
Radical, indeed!
X-Lingo
The Birdman: What 'boarders call world
champion Tony Hawk, because a hawk is a
type of bird.
Copey: The metal safety pole at the top of the
stunt pipes. Created to mimic the bannisters
the experienced 'bladers "soul grind" on.
Tail grind: A stunt where the rear of the board
slides along the safety pipe at the top of the
trick ramp. Considered "radical."
Bogus: Not a happening dude. Also: barney,
primo, or yama jama.
Andrecht air: A high-flying stunt where a
'boarder or blader does a two hundred degree
rotation before landing arm first towards the
curve of the pool or canal.
Getting piped: To jump, feet first, into a half-
pipe or gap ramp.
Skull bongo: A term 'bladers and boarders
use to describe a blow to the head. Named
such because the ringing of the ears reminds
them of the reggae music they like to "jam" to
while getting piped.
Catch vert: An aggressive move where a
'boarder or biker comes off axis while rotating
a move. Can result in a "skull bongo."
Action grind: A trick where a 'boarder or
stunt biker rubs the bottom of his wheels
against the copey or across the edge of a bench,
bannister or fire hydrant.
Ollie: Originally invented by 'bladers, this fan-
tastic move allows 'boarders to flip their
boards into the air by kicking at the board's
upturned ends with their rear feet.
Wax: Used by 'boarders to stick their feet to
the bottom of their boards. Allows them to
perform "ollies."
