I've been skating for about 2
years now and I've been reading
your mag ever since. I enjoy the
articles and looking at the great
photos. The step-by-step photos
are very nice. I'm an eighth grader
and my class has been learning
about gender-fair and gender-
biased and how to recognize it in
articles and stories. Basically gen-
der-biased means that the genders
are portrayed in ways that seem
stereotypical. I was looking at the
January 1997 issue of Thrasher.
As I was looking through the arti-
cles and photos I did not notice
one thing on a female skater. I
thought this magazine was for all
skaters. The photos of girls I did
see were of girls portrayed as sex

objects rather than skater objects.
Not one article in your magazine
talked about female skaters. Girls'
skateboarding is rising all over the
world. I think you should acknowl-
edge the fact that they're here and
helping to keep skateboarding
alive. Go out anywhere that peo-
ple skate and I bet you'll see a few
girls skating. When you do I sug-
gest you shoot a few shots of
them and put them in your maga-
zine monthly, and add some
female-oriented articles. I know
some girls have to be sending pic-
tures in, so when you get some put

them in your article. Two girls
wrapped in flowers bare naked is
not what I mean. I still enjoy your
magazine, and before learning
about gender-fair and gender-
biased I couldn't have cared less,
but now that I know and can rec-
ognize it, I feel I should say some-
thing about it. I only hope you feel
the same way.

their clothes off whenever we're

NO DEAL
I'd just like to know what the big
deal is with punk music and skate-
boarding. Sure it's good to skate to
but so are other bands like Korn,
Deftones, Limp Bizkit, etc. I think
you should include some of them
in your mag. Other than that you
guys rule. Also, I am from a small
town that SUCKS FOR SKATING!
There are a few good spots but not
many. Death to Hanson, Puff
Daddy, and the Spice Girls.
