Let this law... slide
H
old the laughter just long
enough to say Lake Park Police
Chief Jeff Lindskoog has an idea
that's, um... unique. The idea won't
work, and it doesn't make much sense,
but it is unique.
Chief Lindskoog wants the town
council to outlaw death-defying leaps
executed by skateboarders, bicyclists
and in-line skaters. The council will
vote on the ordinance March 4.
The chief's thinking is down to
earth. Specifically, keep those wheels
on the ground. Do any fancy jumps
any jumps at all, in fact and you might
answer to a ticket-writing cop. The
goal, he says, is to protect skaters and
keep them from being so annoying.
If that goal is down to earth, it isn't
at all practical. For one thing, there's no
good way to write the rules into an
ordinance. If all wheels have to remain
on the ground, a skater who runs off a
curb or falls over is guilty.

POET'S CORNER
Injustices
No skateboards allowed,
I hear every day
Damn skaters wreck everything,
If you see it their way
"You can't take that
On the bus!!"
What the hell? Why the fuss?!?
If the ordinance allowed some clear-
ance-say anything less than a foot-I am an artist
it still would be impossible to enforce.
Was that jump 11 inches or 13? The 32
police officers who serve the town of
7,000 between Riviera Beach and North
Palm Beach have better things to do
than in-line patrol. And the proposed
ordinance, which would impose a fine of
$50, will create confrontations that ruin
any chance of rapport between police
and some kids.
I have my own touch
My signature is my style.
My skateboard is my brush
The street is my canvas
Chief Lindskoog suggested the or-
dinance because residents have com-.
plained that kids are using sidewalks,
benches and tables in Kelsey Park to do
their stunts. Imagine that. Children
using a park. What will they do next?
Use a ball field?
Police officers can use their discre-
tion to stop obviously dangerous activi-
ty. Using judgment is harder than writ-
ing tickets. But that's a much better
way to keep those skaters in line.

for themselves or others- even adults. All they

Damon: Teens need guidance
to find a positive direction
in their lives. Adults in the
community must find ways
to communicate clear stan-
dards and expectations.
They can begin by working
out common values. Once
an agenda is established,
young people can join in,
and task forces can be
formed to solve particular
problems. This can create
the sense of community
needed for healthy youth
development.
And society is a faulty easel.
With a mind of its own
A mind of prejudice,
Discrimination
And hatred I hone
The palette use is enormous
A myriad of skills
That require precision
More than their hobby will
To skateboard is to be challenged
To strive for mastery
To go all out
To feel pain
Adrenaline is my Novocaine
It keeps me alive.
The pain I feel is oppression
And disrespect of my sport
They see baggy jeans.
And destruction
They scream, "OPPRESS!
OPPRESS!!!"
I have emotions.
They won't let me express
Their attitude begs for rebellion
They want it
It gives them something to
Gripe about
It gives them their scapegoat.
-Matt Epp,
I am the victim of a victimless crime
Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada
They stole my truck and took away my weed, now I'm doin' time
I stood there to be judged by their mid-evil minds
Fifteen days in jail 13 hundred dollar fine
I have heard a lot since I been in this cell
Stories of felonies that I never should tell.
or they might come look for me to send me to hell
Yet I never thought I'd learn so much sittin' in jail.
I found out how to make methamphetamine
or how to rob an ATM without being seen
break into your mailbox-steal all your checks.
and where to go to trade them for money and sex
Now I'm better off than before I came in
I learned how to survive, living in sin
I made lots of connections and I made lots of friends.
Now I'm one of them-and you're my next victim
When I get out I'm gonna turn my life around
I'm gonna teach my friends all the scams that I found
forget
smokin'
mother nature, get 'em all into crack.
Then I can buy a brand new truck and get a big gat.
I'll be runnin' shit around my neighborhood
I never thought going to jail would turn out so good
I won't have to worry about doing more time
'cause it's all part of my new career
My life of crime. -Conch Cranium
