INFECTIONS &
i
almost missed the
Infections show
on account of Bear the
doorman's crazy stories
about nudie bars in SF
during the 1960s. Had
it not been for some
hapless drunk busting
a water pipe above the
urinals, I don't think I
would have ever
escaped that back cor-
ner of the Foothill Club
where he sat, waiting
patiently for would-be
freeloaders attempting to bust in
via the back alley entrance. But
when duty calls, duty calls; as Bear,
crescent wrench in hand, lumbered
on over to the men's bathroom, 1
moseyed my way over to the stage
just as the Infections broke into
their third or fourth number, an
upbeat foot-tapper called "Good as
It Gets." I had listened to a CD of
their new stuff, called Kill the
Infections, on the way over to the
club from San Pedro, and this song
was the one playing as I pulled up
into the mud-filled parking lot next
to the club. I was humming it as I
helped push some girl's car out of
the lot, tires spinning then catching,
spitting mud all over me and my
piece of shit camera. Free of the
mud bog, they drove off laughing at
me, but I didn't care. I just wanted
to get inside and check out some
rock. Even through the set of the
Words and Photo by Andy Harris
first or second band, a heavy-hitting
trio with vintage noisemakers called
the Verdicts, I kept that Infections
song in my head. So, naturally,
when I finally got away from Bear
and they started playing that jingle,
I found it mighty pleasing to my
sensory sensors. I liked their sound,
a meat and potatoes kind of rock 'n'
roll a la the Devil Dogs but without
the cheesy pompadours. Hailing
from San Franceeesco, with one or
two members coming from an earli-
er band of thugs called the Rip Offs,
the Infections belted out one good-
time rock smasher after the other to
the glee of the intoxicated crowd. It
was the type of show where you
don't see much in the way of mosh-
pit ridiculousness. A much more
common sight being mid-twenties
rocker women in butt-tight cloth-
ing, swaying to and fro with the
music while sipping at mixed drink
concoctions. Shit, maybe
I'm getting old or some
thing, but that scene is a
helluva lot more enjoyable
than having some stage-
diving sweat-hog land
armpit-first on my head.
while a hardcore band spits
out noise. I'm sure Bear
would agree with me on this,
seeing as how he enjoys fixing
plumbing and telling stories of
his glory years much more
than having to step out on the
dance floor to squash some
unruly kids who are
running around in a circle.
Having said all that, the
Foothill's enormous doorman
and I would like to thank the
Infections for bringing rock n roll
in its purest form back to our
neck of the woods. Come
back anytime you like.
