I
I'm a 25 year old
Correctional Peace Officer working at a
California state prison. I almost took a life
yesterday, my own. In a drunken stupor
I put a gun to my temple and pulled the
trigger...nothing. It seems that I jammed a
round in the breach while loading the
weapon. God damn it, I squeezed that
motherfucker with the full intention of
aerating my brain! I had time to think
after that, and think I did. I have been
skateboarding since I was 14 years old. In
one way or another all that matters in my
life is tied to skating. All the people
love in my life I met while skating. Never
will I have a stronger bond with others. I
lead a double life. I spend the day making
choices that affect my life and the lives of
all around me. Let me tell you right now,
if you're involved in any activity that can
get you locked up, stop. Prison is no
joke. That said, do watever the fuck you
want. When I walk out the gate at the end
of the day, I try to regain my identity
and sense of self. The inability to do this
is what got me into this suicidal situation.
Today I skated a drain near my home
that I haven't been to in almost seven
years. I took all my life's frustrations out
on a fucking parking stone. There was
four young skaters there. I said "Wa'sup?"
and the eldest of the four started asking
for tips on how to do some tricks. Four
hours later we were still there doing what
was most important in our lives, skating. I
found my identity and a catharsis in that
ditch. My life shall not waste away like
the ones I watch over. Instead, I will
immerse myself in all the color and diver-
sity that skaters and the skate scene have
to offer. I may be pulling the wool over
my own eyes, but I'm still alive and
that's all that matters right now.

OK, I got some beef. Back in the day I
used to skate from ages 12 to 15.
Anyway, I'm now 21 and not good at
sports. All I've done is like, work. So the
other day I rode past the skatepark for
old times sake and I saw some kids skat-
ing. Then I was like, "Cool, I'll go buy a
board and start again to see if I still got
it." This is where the complaining starts.
What, I say what the fizuck happened to
these fuckin' skateboards? They look
like a snowboard for an elf. No shape,

no concave, and the
nose elevated higher than
the tail-what? Why? I asked for plastic
rails for the sides and the guy behind the
counter looked at me like I was a retard-
ed fool. He did the same thing when I
asked for risers for the trucks. I'm sur-
prised that griptape is still used. Why pay
more for boards with graphics than for
blank ones? That's just plain common.
sense. And how is it that you can railslide
WITHOUT RAILS? Back in the day
when I used to skate, the boards were big,
and wide. It was very easy to rip when
the tails were elevated high to make an
ollie huge. I tried to skate my new midget
board and it's really difficult just to stay
on it. To narrow it down, these new
boards suck. They're weak and gay. My
prediction for '98 is plastic banana boards
from the '70's, or even 2x4's with trucks
and wheels.

down from a 50-
50, slipped out,
broke his wrist.
and fractured his
growth plate. He was in a cast for a long
time and had 2 pins in his wrist. That
half-pipe is the same one that Abirim
Bathgate and George Martin are skating
in the article on Connecticut in Dec. '97.
The ramp is owned by Jocko, a Duffs
and Split rep. The picture in the article
is after the ramp got a new steel surface
and some paint. When we were putting
on the steel I almost got my nipples
cut off. Anyway, Sean's birthday is com-
ing up, and I figured the best present I
could give him would be to try and get
this picture printed in your magazine.
