BAD BOLT PT. II
This letter is from
the perspective of an
avid skateboarder's
mother. My son,
Ronnie Hodges, has been
skating ever since I can
remember. I have never seen anyone take
to something so fast and so well. Before I
knew it we had to build a ramp in the
backyard, and there were always lots of
spare penny he ever got on skateboard-
"the guys" around. Ronnie spent every
ing, and probably every relationship has
been affected by it. The pennies were
spare too because he was in a single par-
ent household with three children. Ronnie
moved from our home in Lawton,
Oklahoma to Durango, Colorado in 1995
right after completing high school. He
worked and skated, and worked and skat-
ed. Then in 1996 things started to happen
for him. He got a couple of sponsors,
started taking road trips, and even had
skating magazines take his picture several
times He told me once, "I'll know I've
made it when you see me in Thrasher." In
the summer of 1997 Ronnie decided to
make a move to California so he could
be "where it happens." He worked hard,

Hey, wuzzup to the skaters of the
world! Thrasher is by far the best sk8
mag of all time. I get one every month
and I read every issue cover to cover
at least twice. I love the interviews
with bands, pro skaters, and I love all
the cool pix. I've been skating for over
a year now and I've drawn many of my
friends into the sport. We formed a sk8
crew called Unity and we're always
together in some form, either two of us
or the whole crew. We totally rip. And
we totally love Thrasher.
I only have two com-
plaints with your mag: 1)
Wuzzup with the term
"heavy metal faggots?"
I've read this many times
in your mag and it's got-
ten me pissed off every
time. I myself am a met-
alhead, but I also like.

The Offspring. I don't get
it, all the metalheads I
know don't talk shit.
about punk rock. Hell, a
lot of them like some punk rock. Some
excellent skate music is metal. Look
at KoRn and Metallica. Even better,
what about Slayer? That's definitely
metal, and provides for some kick ass
skate music. I get stoked every time I
listen to them. Another example: take
a look at the Misfits. They're punk
rock, but Glen Danzig went on to form
a heavy metal band with his own
namesake. Even Ozzy can provide
some skate music. So, back off the talk
about metalheads. They can skate just
as good as punks. 2) More pix of
Simon Woodstock!!!! He rules, and I
never see pix of him. Thanks for bein'
the best mag in the world and always
getting me stoked.

saved all his money, put his truck in the
shop so it would be in top shape for the
road, and started out September 2, 1997.
He had broken his wrist (skating of
course) a week or so before the trip, but
he knew it would heal in time (like all his
other injuries). His excitement was so
extreme I could feel it when he called
before leaving for California. I was so
happy for him. I don't remember what
time it was that night, but my daughter,
Andrea, was holding the phone, trembling,
saying something about Ronnie being in
an accident and someone needing to talk
to me. The voice on the other end said
they were some type of police in Kayenta,
Arizona, and Ronnie had been involved in
an accident with injury and had been
transported to an hospital in Kayenta by
ambulance. I asked if he would be OK.
