'he Bar Feeders kick out the fast music with tight breaks and no melodic
bullshit people have come to settle for in the '90s. Cecil, Trey and
Jimmy play with a raw edge that punk was based on, and perform with an
intensity most bands these days seem to have forgotten. Cecil alone has
more air time than 90% of bands nowadays, and he's on drums! The Bar
Feeders have a great sense of humor and are a must-see live, so don't miss
the boat when they play, and let them save your soul like they did mine-Pete
Loudmouth 1997 had The Bar Feeders involved in all sorts of vulgar and
bizarre activities including abominable drunkenness, excruciatingly bad
joke-telling, and asphyxiating foot odor excretion. Despite it all, we managed
to release a full-length debut record entitled Scotto El Blotto, named after an
exalted drinking buddy who has helped the band immeasurably. Projects
include: Mission Accomplished, a comp featuring a comprehensive who's who
of SF's Mission District's degenerate "scene"; Death To False Metal, which
features punk bands covering '80s metal; and a split 7" with the Human
Beans, a group of underage floozies with a lotta heart, but tiny bladders.
Tour-wise, we've been up and down
the Left Coast several times,

and even managed to drag our sorry asses to Hawaii-mostly for the 95¢ Mai Tais, but
we did play some epic beach parties. We'd like to thank The Loudmouths, The
Crosstops, The Solvents, Monster Truck Driver, The Piss Drunks, Shoegazer,
and all the other (including The Other) bands that have tolerated our slobbering
malarky or have given us a helping hand-Jimmy Bar Feeder... A Little Sex And Death by
seminal LA punk/bar band The Lazy Cowgirls is some top-notch punk rock straight
outta Pad Todd's (bald) head, proving that some things really do get better with age...
Sweden's non-stop rock train The Hellacopters have released a single called "1995
Tilt City Freespeedin" that will seriously knock your socks off. With guitars that would
pulverize a rhinoceros, up front and in-your-face like you like it, and just enough fuzz to
make your hessian friends scratch their heads, this band is all hit and no miss... Speaking of in-
your-face guitars, The Humpers just put out a new single also; this one's called "Fucking
Secretaries." The American Champions of Rock could've done better than put an LP track on
the B-side, but this one smokes enough to be worth the purchase... Japan's former Kings of
Punk, Teengenerate, may have broken up, but the posthumous releases still dribble in. The lat-
est is a "live series" 7" recorded in Chicago. The sound's just okay, and the songs are on other
releases, but goddamnit, it's Teengenerate! You either know what I'm talking about, or you're
just plain lost
Also from our Pacific neighbors comes the Banana Erectors. I know what
you're
u're thinking, with a name like Banana Erectors, they must be all name and no game. But
working-class punk in that Ramones vein is what you can expect, and it'll have you tappin'
your toes and pogoing from the get-go... Planet Pimp Records has a long history of fucked up
releases (Three Stoned Men, the Shatners, bizarre "movie" soundtracks), and the latest
(supposedly in a series) are two way, way out there 7's: Sounds Of The San Francisco
Bookstores and Sounds Of The American Fast Food Restaurants, Volume 1. Wander into a porno
store or Taco Bell with a tape recorder and hear what there is to hear ... Hail Mary has
released a 7" titled Crashing Down that reminds me a bit of Born Against; they start off
with enough raw power to launch the space shuttle, then slow things down and get real-
ly, really heavy, grinding up what semblance of bones that didn't already get shaken
out of your body-Wez Lundry ... Those kids at Punk Uprisings have really outdone
themselves this time. Following on the heels of volume 1, which featured 25 bands
such as Zoinks! and The Vandals, the Punk Uprisings, Volume 2 compilation fea-
tures 39 East Coast bands (in Dewey decimal order, no less) for a scant
Included on the record are Against All Authority, Catharsis, Ensign, H20
(recorded live at RFK Stadium), 97a, The Bouncing Souls, who perform the
"Punk Uprising Theme Song," and Atom And His Package, a neo-Devo band
from Virginia-Joseph Epstein... Haiku De'tat is the latest attempt by former-
Freestyle Fellowship members Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, and Micah 9 to
overthrow the reigning lyrically-lackluster monarchy. Their bassist, Emerson
Cardenas, gave me the poetry-slammin' self-titled tape a few days before their
melodic, light-hearted, luxuriously lyrical show at SF's Transmission Theater. The
opening act of two MCs and one DJ (L'Roneous with Double Life, featuring
Gennessee) bantered bad (not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good) battle
rhymes like they were back in the high school lunchroom. Haiku finally took the
stage after a strange intermission of bald-headed babes twirling lit torches. The
rhymers vibed onstage as only old friends can, obviously enjoying themselves
while blending seamlessly with their bowstring-tight band... Aceyalone, probably
the best-known of the group, has also just released a solo album entitled The Book
of Human Language. True to Acey's style, the "book" is chock-a-block with word-
play, wordploys, and everything you've come to expect from one of hip-hop's best
wordsmiths; and each "chapter" is a metaphorical exploration of an aspect of exis-
tence from an urban LA point of view. This record just doesn't work as background
music; not only do you have to listen closely to appreciate it, you have to listen
closely just to understand what he's talking about... A cut below in complexity,
but not in enjoyability, is J-Live's latest collection of singles, which includes a
lyrical reworking of his first single "Longevity" ("Longevity pt 2"), and a
tasty treatise on a classic concept,
schooling sucker MCs
("School's In")-True 54.
