boys with skateboarding

BRIGHTON A Brighton area youth has beer
found guilty of skateboarding, a misdemeanor that
could result in up to 90 days in jail.
"It's the first time in my 15 years that skateboarding
ever went to trial," city

The city adopted an ordinance last year that prohib
its skateboarding

consent.
The incident occurred on March 17 when Paulausko
who was then 17, was ticketed by a

Paulauski's mother, Darlene, appeared before coun
cil in April to protest her son's ticket, telling counci
that when he went to the police station in an attempt to

The family plans to appeal the verdict, Darlene Pau-
lauski said, adding that she and her son didn't want to
comment until it was resolved.1

receive up to 90 days in jail, a $500 fine and costs.
However, Brennan said she would recommend
a fine and costs. Brighton Police Lt. Gerald Bockhau
sen agrees
"I don't think going to jail for skateboarding is some-
thing that we would encourage," Bockhausen sald
"There's a lot of first-time offenders for which
you
shouldn't consider incarceration. However, if the pat-
tern continues, then let nature take its course."

SEQUIM-Lime green is cool-
unless you're the Sequim police chief,
city manager or mayor and that's the
color of your hair for a couple of days
And that is going to be the case
Oct. 11 for chief Byron Nelson, city
manager Tom Lawell and mayor
Thomas, who volunteered to have
their hair colored lime green if skate-
boarders raising money for a new
park raised $1,000.
The boarders put out plastic collec-
tion buckets all over town with the
challenge listed on the front, then
proceeded to push their big fund-rais-

owners there about how we are rais-
ing money, and they thought it was
great idea and said they wished they
had done it that way," Jake said.
The group has been meeting regu-
larly with city and community mem
bers on Thursdays. The most recent
addition to fundraising efforts is an
auction to be held the same day the
green hair is bestowed on the city
officials. Donated items and services
from businesses and individuals will
be auctioned and many of the skate-
boarders are donating themselves for
auction to do odd jobs or yard work.
The auction will be held at Sequim
High School beginning at 7 pm.
There will be a viewing of the items
ahead of time.
Mindy Wiegel, fundraising chair-
woman, said the group plans to clean
up a popular hangout known as
half-block" this Saturday and plant
flowers in Air Flo Heating on West
Cedar in the same area.
"We are also still looking for dona-
tions of services or items for the auc
tion. People can take them to the
City Hall desk or drop off donations
there made out to 'City of Sequim
Skateboard Park, Wiegel said

up to $60,000
"It's their park, and they are
putting their all into it," she said.
