"Oh, no, why does my T-shirt have hole?" My
friend said, "You are fool." I said, "Why?"
"Because you roll 5 minute ago." So I had sor-

TIM BUCKTU
I was stoked to see the Tim McKenney
interview in the July issue. I had the chance to
meet him when he, Dan Drehobl, and Jesse
Paez stopped by at a local skateshop. Tim
was really friendly, and most everyone at the
shop that day went home with either a
Think or Freedumb T-shirt. Not only was Tim
one of the nicest guys I've ever met, he's also
one of the raddest rippers out there. It's
skaters like Tim who don't care about the
technical tricks and just want to have fun
that are keeping it real.

One fall day in 1995, I walked into
Madison, WI's local skateshop, Flying Fish. I
asked the man behind the counter if he'd
mind me leafing through the issue of Thrasher
I located on the shelf. The man, who turned
out to be Benny Imhoff, owner and founder
of the establishment, said, "sure."

ONE SOLDIER
Only in the last month of my 6-year
love of skateboarding and 19 years on
Earth have I truly found the meaning of life.
I've realized in myself what I need to do to
prosper in my life and my skating. The
things I'm about to say have been said
countless times, but the meaning finally hit
home. My skating has improved ten-fold.
I'm having more fun and more feelings of
accomplishment and adrenaline-pumped
sessions than in all my 6 years.
You don't need to worry or even think
about styles, vibes, cool tricks, attitudes or
all that other mindless crap. Be yourself
when you skate; people will remember you
for who you are, not someone you acted
like or looked like. I had friends who I lived
with off and on for a couple of years. We
also travelled for a while. But, to me, they
skated for the wrong reasons. When meet-
ing new people, they wanted to rip them
up, vibe them, then leave. I, myself, realize
now that meeting new people and intro-
ducing yourself will only make you prosper.
It was strange and hard, but I went my own
way from these friends before I turned into
them. I still see them, but it's different.
They still don't understand, and probably
never will. I've met many different kinds
of friends-some skate, some don't. To me,
they're just people.
Through my non-skating years, I periodi-
cally picked up the mag just to keep in touch
with part of the then-decrepit skate heart.
But that Oct '95 issue was different. In small
letters, along with some other names on the
top, was ALVA. It jumped out at me, grab-
bing my full attention. I had to refocus and
look twice. It was like I was coming back to
life from some kind of death. My adrenaline
rushed as I quickly ripped through the pages,
attempting to locate the article. I was obliv-
ious to everything, but at the same time
careful to soak in everything that passed by
my bugged-out eyeballs. Then it was
there-the unmistakable Alva logo-same as it
ever was for so long, way back when. The
frontside air, backside edger-same as they
always were back then.
My mind went back to a time before this
I
generation of design and tricks, back to a
Iland of Skateboarder mag, Who's Hot, Dog,
IZ, Alva, and my board. Back to a time
that was as unreal then as it is now. Back.
to a time when skating was my lifestyle..
Back to a time and land that gave me more.
hope, strength and determination than I
have ever known.
As far as my skating goes, I stopped look-
ing at things and saying that I could do that
grind or slide. Believe me, you get an
astonishingly greater feeling when it's you
who just did it. I am now on a personal
mission to skate everything-anywhere,
anytime. For myself! To please no one but
my own needs and desires. With this
knowledge in hand, I've conquered many
fears in my skating and lost an equal
amount of blood and skin in the process.
But it feels so good! Nothing is comparable
to what I get from my skateboard. My
most heated sessions have just been me,
my board, fear, pain and the obstacle or
trick at hand. I believe if I can do something
by myself when I skate, I can do it any-
where on anything.
I started writing this after looking at
the Oct '95 issue. At that time, I hadn't
skated for quite a few years, but that's
been slowly changing since that issue. I felt
that in order to have this worthy of a pub-
Ilication, I needed to be skating. But I have
realized it's not a validity point just to
actually do it. A lot of people have sup-
ported me in my skate ways. Some of you
I may know who you are and were, and
I some of you won't, but thanks to you all.
It's unbelievable, the impact the Dogtown

even more unbelievable is the impact it
