hope skaters come together and
grind every car or slide every rail. I

LONG LINE
The "Skater
of the Year"
article was
great. It was
nice to see a
collection of
some of the
best skate
boarders ever
in one article.
and I'm sure that many other skaters
enjoyed it as much as I did.
I've been reading Thrasher since
1986 and don't recall a Skater of the
Year award until Tony Hawk's in
1990. But, anyhow, your choices
were all excellent ones-when and i
how you made your decisions
doesn't really matter. What does
matter is the absence of some of the
best skaters ever in the contenders
section. The following skaters have
contributed much to skateboarding,
and I think they are worthy of men-
tion in that category: Matt Hensley,
Bod Boyle, Jason Jessee, Natas
Kaupas, Chris Miller, Ray Barbee,
Neal Hendrix. Mike Frazier, Rodney
Mullen, Jeff Phillips, and Willy
Santos. Whether it was contest
domination, video part supremacy.
or just plain being the shit, all the
above skaters had at least one MVP.
type year. Whatever your criteria, I
think you'd be hard-pressed to find
a longtime skater who would dis-
agree with
most of the
aforementioned
skaters as
deserving of
"worthy" sta-
tus. Another
page with some
of these skaters
pictured would
have added a
lot to the arti-
cle. I do understand the difficulty in
choosing who's in/who's out, I had
trouble narrowing my list down to
just eleven.
That having been said, I would
like to submit some names who I
believe will be in the running for
Skater of the Year in the near
future: Reese Forbes, Colin McKay.
Kenny Hughes, Jamie Thomas, Bob
Burnquist, and Donny Barley.
