Coming from a place where most
bands only stop in for a pit stop on their
way to other big cities, San Jose's own
Odd Numbers can get any party rockin'
with their unique style of punk/funk. As gui-
tarist/singer Dave Baisa, drummer John
Cummings, and bassist Dave Miller can tell
you, if you've never seen them live, do yourself
a favor and check them out.
How long have you guys been around?
Dave Baisa: Eight long years.
How did the band form?
Out of our obsession for The Who and
The Jam and our incredible ability to party. Plus
we thought it would be a good way to work
around a day-job. I guess the joke was on us.
How would you describe your musical style?
We call it maximum R&B, but it's a mixture.
of punk and R&B, and I'm not even sure if that
really explains it. Some people call us a mod
band, but we're trying to pull away from that
even though we still have some mod leanings.
What happened to your drummer?
He fucked up bad while we were on tour in
Europe. After a show in Hastings, England, he
got on a motorcycle with some drunk guy and
wrapped it around a pole. He almost lost his
leg; they wanted to cut it off, but he begged

them to try and save it. He's finally getting bet-
ter now, two years later.
Do you all skate or have you ever skated?
When we were young, we did a bit. All of
our friends do, so we're always around it. I
used to like skating half-pipes and fun shit like
that, but none of us were ever rippers.
Nowadays, all you'll ever see us skating to is
the liquor store.
Didn't you guys do a US skatepark tour around
the time the New Deal video came out?
Yeah. We got a lot of attention for doing
those New Deal videos, and at the time we
were playing a national tour, and it kind of
turned into playing all these skateparks. It
was cool 'cause we played some pretty leg-
endary places like The Turf and Eastern
Vert. I can't even remember most of the
places. That was like four years ago. But we
still play parks if we get asked to..
Do you want to thank anyone or have any
closing statements?
I'd like to thank the BMC for all the support:
they've been my rock. I also want to say check
out our new record, A Guide To Modern Living.
