Brian Besold
Home: Boulder, CO
Sponsor: BC Surf and Sport
One man's flower is another man's
weed. Or so it would seem when I watch my
friend Brian Besold skate. "#*!!" he screams dur-
a 6 it backside air. "What the hell?!!" he hollers dur-
a disaster spanning the whole length of the ramp. I'm in
awe; he's disgusted. "The coping feels funny," he'll explain. I
just roll my eyes. He laughs. Such is the situation when the aver-
age meets up with the truly talented. Raised in the pools, ramps
and streets of Las Vegas, Brian flies faster than a roadrunner and
often his biggest problem is staying within the confines of the 24
ft Boulder Skatepark vert ramp. Grinds along the edge of the flat-
bottom are not uncommon, although gigantic airs of all descrip-
tions aren't either. While vert is where he raises the most eye-
brows, give him any obstacle and he'll attack it with dentist-like
precision. Pools, handrails, ledges-heck, he can probably freestyle
like a champ too. Though he may be hard on himself and the
ramps he rides, Brian's the first one to make a joke, shake al
stranger's hand, or cuddle his dog Riley with mother-like affection..
He bides his off-board time studying architecture at the University.
of Colorado, managing a snowboard camp in the summer, taking
photos, listening to music, and goofing around with friends. I'd tell
you to look out for Brian in the future or something like that, but
he's not exactly the type of guy who videotapes himself all day or
looks for ways to "blow up" on the skate scene. He just skate-
boards-really, really well.

Who's Hot with Phil Stern
After battling his way up through the rough-and-tumble ranks of
Midwest novice skateboarding, "Ultimate" Phil Stern is poised to seize
the worldwide amateur title at this year's Cheetos Brand snackfood
Extreme ShowdownTM which has been tentatively slated to coincide with
the extreme footbag, in-line and cow-chipping events on the beautiful
beaches of Lake Michigan near Gary, Indiana. With a virtually bottomless
bag of moves including axle stops, Tag plants, oversouls, Christ airs to
fakie, and balls-out banister blasts, Stern is sure to win over the judges
and the television audience alike. The fans will also undoubtedly be
straining their eyes for Stern's patented judo air where he kicks off his lead
foot like a Samurai warrior! At only 20 years of age and with the good
folks at BC Surf and Sport taking care of the bills, he's got plenty of
years of big air ahead of him. As Phil says, "It's not like I'm skating any-
more, I'm just flying around."
Let's see what the fans have to say:
"Never do a nosepicker with a coper."-Tommy Guerrero (to Phil)
"The curb is red, no need for wax."-Ron Chatman (about Phil's terrain)
"I didn't think anyone could beat Tony Hawk, but I'm glad it was me."
Christian Hosoi (discussing competition with Phil)
"I think everybody in the world should just live." -Brian Brannon (indi-
rectly mentioned to Phil)
-Michael Burnett
