Swallowing the bitter pill of
success, Blinker The Star are

after stealing
"gold"-record, that is-from
their great white northern
homeland of Canada.
Singer/songwriter Jordan
Zadorozny spills his guts about
the band's attempt to conquer a
brave new world:
Where does your unique sound
come from?
There were very low Canadian
bands that really influenced us. It
was pretty broad while we were
growing up, and were more into
British and American bands. The

Guided By Voices. They're the best
pop band of the 90s. He has the
history of pop music in his brain,
and I want to pick at it further.
Who is the girl on the cover
of your new record, A
Bourgeois Kitten?
Jody is her name, and she was
drunk in Australia whan that photo
was taken. The reason why we
used it was because it reminded
each one of us of our ex-girlfriends.
Are the border police tougher in
Canada than they are in the US?
the states didn't have as strict
of border measures as they do,
Canada wouldn't react as accord
ingly. A lot of things Canada does
politically is just a knee-jerk reac
tion to the states. We hired an
Immigration lawyer. It's been pretty
easy since we've had him working
for us. Before that, our old bass-
player was Danish and didn't have
Canadian or American citizenship
so that made everything worse. We
had a really good show lined up in
NYC, which was heavily publicized.
and we couldn't get over the bor
der because he hadn't made a
specific trip to the Danish
Consulate to get these specific
papers that we were never even
told about, so we got rid of him
and brought in a Canadian. Since
then we've had no problems.
What is the most irritating ques-
tion people ask you?

there's a lot of inbreeding in

Nonstop for
JOHNNY CASH
Out of the pit of obscurity to
cult following status, Korn
downloads a twisted hybrid of
funk metalcore fusion that a
new generation of disciples
readily devour, addressing for-
bidden subjects that are so con-
troversial, they fuck you up like
cardiac arrest. With no lyric
sheet insert included with their
second release, Life Is Peachy,
you are left alone to decipher
the psychobabble, temper
tantrum, convulsion-style
vocals. Drummer, David Silveria,
gives us a taste of what Korn is
really all about
three days and nights through Nevada,
Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and the
swamp, Johnny kept us awake tellin' sto-
ries about rebellion, jail, beans, whiskey,
cocaine, gunfighters, hangin's, egg suckin'
dogs, and an occasional heartbreak-all
things us young folks can really identify
with. Then, recently. I was given the
opportunity to check out the Man in Black
at The Fillmore in San Francisco. It was
the perfect place to see him. The Joint is a
large room with big, red velvet curtains,
balconies, and huge, haunted chandeliers
ghostly lit by purple lights. The whole
scene was like hangin' out in an old, fron-
tler ballroom. The only crowd I expected
to see were a few cowboys, ranchers, gun-
fighters, ladies, miners, hicks, whores, doc-
tors, drunks and music industry types.
Instead, there were small groups of yup
pies, frats, jocks, weird lesbians and dick-
head employees. The best was a 50-year-
old pillow-biter drunk, crawling around
near the far end of the main bar, looking
for a place to puke. Cash was great, and
his bad-ass picker looked like an old gun-
fighter on his way from Bodie to
Virginia City. Cash opened up with
"Folsom Prison Blues" and performed
my personal favorite, "Orange Blossom
Special," while standing underneath a
spotlight, playin' his harmonica, as a
screen showing old footage of trains
stood in the background. He even turned
the show over to his wife, June Carter,
for a few tunes. But the best thing.
though, was the sound of Johnny's voice;
it hasn't gotten tired-only wiser and
tougher. There aren't too many like him,
so if the Man in Black comes to your
town with his wagon trail, get your hands
on some wood ether or jack and go
check out some real bad news-J
understand that you grew
up skating hard before Korn
took off,
I remember reading Thrasher
when it wasn't so huge yet and
finally getting my test board. It was
Mike McGill. Then my cousin
and I got heavily into skating and
both had ramps. We skated after
school, before school, weekends,
and all during the summer. We
finally went up to this skate camp
on a college campus by Fresno.
There were about 400 kids staying
there, and all we did was skate.
Korn fans are a hardcore group.
Why are they so committed?
Because we earned our fans
We earned our popularity from
touring, not from one song that
everyone has heard on the radio
over and over again or from one
video. That's why everybody's
more loyal, more fanatical about
the whole thing, because it's not
just a catchy song they're into,
they're into the whole album.

No, we just used to call him that
a nickname because he looked
so skinny and out of shape.
What influenced your style and
sound the most while growing
up in Bakersfield?
It's hard to say because we
started in Bakersfield, but after
being together for almost three
years, everyone moved down to
the LA area. At that point, we
were still trying to develop our
own sound. We listened, kept
our eyes and ears open to what
the scene was like, what was
changing what was fresh and
what wasn't. I mean, if you keep
your eyes open, and you're in LA
you see all these bands that are
just like everyone else, not
breaking any new ground, mak-
ing you think. These guys are
not doing anything to catch any
one's attention, they're just doing
the same thing! But we, on the
other hand, just kept trying until
we found our own niches
