Long Island,
NY's Vision of
Disorder play a
new style of metal-
Hic music that defies
conformity and succeeds
in being eclectic, complex and
dynamic. Like their new school com-
patriots, VOD are nice guys that
play very tough music; they don't
need to front. Having never played
farther west than Grand Rapids, MI,
VOD is now setting off on what
promises to be an endless tour. Will
the world embrace their unique style
of music?
Now that you're booked for the
rest of your life, are you going to
start showing up for shows? You
have a reputation....
Singer, Tim Williams: We've had a lot
of band transportation problems. We
never had a van, so we had to ask
friends and, you know, sometimes it
would fall through. "And you know what
else happens a lot? People book us, but
don't tell us!
Guitarist, Mike Kennedy: Especially
Connecticut and New Jersey. What I
dons understand is, they started doing"
that when they knew we were recording
the album.
Guitarist, Matt Baumbach Over the
summer, the record took a lot langer than
we thought it would. Then our bassist
dropped out for a while, so we had to
cancel all these shows right after another.
When I first saw you, you still didn't
have a bassist.
Matt: For the first two-and-a-half years,
we didn't have a bassist. When we start
ed, we were playing pretty tight, and
we'd tune down so it sounded pretty
good, and we wanted to play out, so we
did. Then it got to the point where we
weren't even looking anymore. We
played with Type-O Negative and Life
of Agony without a bassplayer. People
mistakenly thought it was a deliberate
thing. Then, one day, a friend of ours
said, "Yo, I know a bassplayer" and that's
when we hooked up with Mike
Fleischmann. When he ripped out the

Tim, I noticed a lot of over-
lapping vocal lines on the
record, How do you handle
that live?
Tim: When we record
1 concentrate on mak
ing it sound
right. Sometimes
it makes it a little harder live, but I can
usually pull it off. I always make sure I can
do it live before we record it.
You put a lot of demands on your
voice, especially the fact that you
alternate between singing and
screaming. Is it going to hold up
under all this touring?
Tim: We shall see. I've been practicing &
lot and getting more used to holding my
throat in the proper way. I went to at
vocal coach a couple times.
Do people think that you're at
Krishna band because you're signed
to Supersoul?
Matt: People have a tendency to want to
Jump things together and have miscon+
ceptions. We're just happy to work with
Supersoul because it has major distribu-
tion, but it's run like an independent
Mike: It
lets us keep
our integrity as a
hardcore band and allows us to tour a
lot. We made sure we have complete
creative control.
Where do you see new school hard-
core music heading?
Mike: The music is getting more intri-
cate: people trying different things,
experimenting, stretching out, a let
more singing along with the scream-
ing, more evolved arranging, the fast
breaks, the slow downs, all the styles
combined together something my dad
might appreciate.
Matt: Yeah, right.
