the demo, I can hear it-the sound of
wheels going up a ramp and a truck
grinding metal coping. Oh, here's all
the people watching too.
"You have to go over there to that
lady Celeste to get your wrist band
to get inside the barrier."
"Okay... Hey, I'm in the demo. My
namne's on the list."
"Alright, here you go. Hurry up
and start skating. Ron and Justin are
the only ones out there."
Let me just step over you there.
Thanks. There's the quarter-pipe |
heard getting grinded, and here's a
jump ramp with a little gap to a
bank landing ramp, oh, and there's
a little grinder bar. There isn't
much here,
"Hey, what's up?"

"Just going to try to skate."

"Oh, pretty good."
Okay, I'm pushing now. Don't fall,
everyone's watching. Going to need
more speed to get to the top of the
quarter-pipe, big pushes, just a
Smith stall grind, whoa, there's no
deck on this quarter-pipe. Ride
down, got plenty of speed now. Ollie
off the launch ramp and land on the
bank Okay, made it back, didn't
fall. alright
Hey, this is Armando. He
arranged this whole thing."

"Skated Derby. Actually had fun,
first time ever. Then I went to some
party, and then slept over at Mark
and Mike's house."
"Oh, cool.
Whoa, Ron nallied the gap. That's
rad. Okay, push at the quarter-pipe

again, backside this time. Backside disaster, that was
easy. Ground's kind of rough, ollie the gap again, I bet I
could kickflip it. Better slide or I'll run into everyone. Hey,
Wade did an invert already, we just got here.
It's fuckin' hot today, huh
"Yeah, it actually is. It's been hotter the last few days."
I think I'll try a kickflip now... There, I made it. after
five hundred tries. Ron made a kickflip melon, sick. Mm,
Jesse's here now too.
"Hey, let's spread the ramps apart, make 'em Evel
Knievel style
"Yeah, do it."
"Okay, just kick this one back a few feet."
"Oh, that's too easy. Let's make it bigger. Kick it back a
couple more feet."
I hope everyone sees that I spread 'em out some so they
don't hurt themselves on my account. Och, Jesse barely
made it. I'm going to try too. Push at the quarter-pipe, big
pushes, frontside air, got lots of speed now, allie, ooh, that
is pretty big now, land, have to slide right away to slow down
before I run into all the skaters. I think I'll try a 180°. Push,
push, push, push, hit the tail, oh, I'm a pussy... There, I
made it, after five hundred fries. Ooh, Jesse's trying at
backside 180°.
"It's fuckin' hot today, huh?"
"Yeah, I'm sweating like a pig"
Oh, here comes Jesse. Not quite 90° on that 180° rota-
tion. Holy shit, he landed in 50/50 on the edge of the land-
ing ramp. That is for sure the best thing all day...

There was a gallery show of skate-
board artwork in a building near where
the session went down. Can you imagine
these guys discussing the artistry of Rob
Roskopp graphics if the boards were
being skated instead of on the wall of
the gallery? At a skate demo you often
see a lot of non-skaters staring
awestruck at the same thing that they
would call the cops about in a different
setting; they've been trained to only rec
ognize something as artistic and praise
worthy if it's in a sanctioned environ
ment. Ron Whaley grabs an ollie to
takie high above the eye of the ever-pre-
sent demo video poacher.
"Fuck, I think I

"I don't know. It
