think I had my own until 1976. First came wood decks and best were there for me to witness and learn from: Steve Alba, Micke

Skatopia in Buena Park, Lakewood,
Paramount and Big O. Streets, hills, and
ramps were skated during the week, then
the park on the weekend. What a blast!
The crew consisted of my big brother Joey
(the "Yo") Lucero. Danny and Roger
Rowlands, Ritchie Wright, and my good
buddy, Jeff Mercey.
1979. Boards were 10" wide or wider.
trucks were 8" wide, and wheels were fast
as hell. Big O was the hot park as well as
the Upland Pipeline. I progressed pretty
fast, pulling frontside and backside airs,
grinds and tailtaps. I was feelin' good.
Skate City opened in Whittier two min-
utes from my house. It was the best park
in the world with a 13-foot keyhole, full-
pipe with 3/4 bowled end, kidney, capsule.
