You don't have to snowboard at resorts or back hills
to be a pro. Just sign on as a demo dog for the
alt/extreme trade show tour circuit coming to an out-
door Amphitheater near you. Imagine a mid-summer
gig featuring man-made snow kicker ramps, this
week's hottest bands, and more spectators, groupies,
and sticker-hounding kids than you'll ever draw to a
cold mountain. A recent trend fest at The Shoreline
Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, called
Kamp KOME (named after a local radio station's call
letters) attracted almost 20,000 flatlanders to see
Filter, 7 Mary 3. Beck, and No Doubt play the hits,
while boarders flailed off the Levi's-sponsored, man-
made snow/rock salt-covered power kicker. Big back-
flips and 360 pokes were "in the house." Even more
crowd pleasing was when a plank pilot missed the
mark, pile driving themselves agony-of-defeat style
into the foam-padded gap they were trying to clear.
While the crowd roared approval, real pros, industry
types, and out of work photographers stood by with
arms folded and heckled. Meanwhile, down by the
"second stage" (Cab's band Soda was playing without
him because Stevie was at the Olympics skating
before a TV audience of 7 billion people) was a vert
'demo' skateboard ramp (definition: no vert and big
coping that sticks out) being scorched by Tas Pappas,
Tait Roelofs and some other gnar daddies. There
might have been some in-liners there, too, but
nobody noticed. Skateboarders and young girlies in
attendance were the only ones NOT affecting the
goon squad, eraser head, bleached buzz cut with sil-
ver framed wraparounds and nose/ear/eyebrow ring.
But the best parts were the booth selling glass
"tobacco pipes and when that chick from No Doubt
came out and jiggled her flabby belly.
