THRILL JOCKEY
Prominent artist and filmmaker Larry Clark is
said to be hired for even more Airwalk television
ads. Presumably motivated by Airwalks' and
Duffs' recent spate of quality TV spots, Vans has
entered the fray. Their "Snowboarding is a better
rush than any drugs" offering is traumatic dra
matics at their most verbose. If you need further
proof of Madison Avenue "geniuses" affliction
with "skate inspired" adverts, check out the lat
est Spin magazine, which has six ads of a rolling
nature. Other involvees include Tobin Yelland.
Andy Roy and Salman Agah.
A better flush than any toilet... Following poor
course conditions and overt skater harassment
by security guards at the Münster Monster.
Mastership, 15th Annual World Championships,
certain individuals responded in kind and
threw down with the German law and order
forces. When the dust cleared. Mike Vallely, Greg
Carroll, and Rick Howard led a US/Brazilian
skater boycott which turned the global champi
onships into a regional club contest. Organizer
Titus Dittman promised a "full investigation" and
I was later observed drinking with Dave Duncan
and Danielle and Don Bostick. Ralf Middendorf.
Titus right hand man, was reportedly in Cali and
Chicago visiting the Extreme Games, but many
felt he was trying to mend fences and drum up
support for the 1997 Münster Funster edition.
The boycott incited a flurry of correspon-
dence and political machinations. In a
different vein, International
Association of Skateboard
Companies Executive Director Jim
Fitzpatrick testified before the
California State Judiciary Committee.

ardous activities list.

HOUSE OF STALE
Model skater, Jim Thiebaud, launches a
stinker all the way to the flatbottom.
Apparently, the lawyers lobby bitterly opposes
such a move, because it would dramatically
reduce lawsuits, hence depriving them of rev-
enue. Theoretically, once the sport is recognized
as hazardous, then the pathway for a multitude
of public skateparks will
be cleared.
DOME SHOTS
More on the crossover sports tip. Surfer mag-
azine recently interviewed Chris Miller and
Tony Hawk on that same subject. Promoing his
multi task adaptability. Hawk has also been
doing design work for the same ocean mag.
Walt Disney officials are building a California i
theme attraction in Anaheim which will feature
the mountains, the city, and the beach. An arti-
ficial surfing environment is on tap, and they
are reportedly searching for a "clever" skate
run for demos. Around Disneyland, Tony's name
has been dropped as a potential skate demo
area architect.
High Wheelers West Malibu ramplex has been
a poorly kept secret for years. However, when
CRO-MAG-MAN
Donny Barley scrutinizes an artist's concep-
tion of the missing link
actor Robert Downey Jr was found sleeping
uninvited at skate local Daniel Curtis' beach-
front home, the police were called. The actor
claims that the plywood structure adjacent to
the home had tricked him into thinking he lived
there. Frequent ramp guests such as Tony
Montgomery, Joel Tudor, and Griff Snyder didn't
buy into the story. Neither did a judge who
reportedly ordered the actor into jail and a
compulsory drug treatment program. Also on the
scene was the notorious Runman video group
who appeared to be making an Enviroman
action epic of the affair for MTV. The character
in question stood on the beach wearing
skintight spandex talking eco warrior speak and
then proceeded to shoot Frances Canyon..
SNOW JOB
World professional surfing champions Rob
Machado and Kelly Slater recently guested on LA
FM band talk radio with scenester host Ricky
Rockman. While the purported topic was sup-
posedly surfing's proposed entry in the next
Olympic games to be held in Australia, the trio -
instead got into talking about the one and only
Tony "Maddog" Alva.

ceedings and the cancellation of the SF Battle

on the Bay and Venice Street events, much con-
cern has been expressed in the matter of
future events. A non-aligned, unorganized float-
ing non-event to be held in the Bay Area is
amongst the wilder rumor. More believable per-
haps is Micke Reye's suggestion to hold a Pro
Jack Daniels Tourney at Put N' Putt. Drake
Jones, Kelly Bird. Joey Bast, and James Kelch
would be the obvious favorites in this golf fest.
With all of the talk revolving about the issue of
public skateparks, the question is often raised
about how long it takes to accomplish such a
task. The longest period of time we could locate
REST IN PEACE
David Hunt, who was an avid skater and
lover of life, recently passed away. He
lived his life to the fullest and made all of
his family and friends happy to be a part
of his life. He will be missed by all who
knew and loved him. Sean Dolinsky
was San Francisco's fifteen-year effort to build
another public rec-skate resource. They have
been working on this since the opening of the
Hunter's Point Dish. The fastest interval was
Temecula's two-year intensive effort. The average
appears to be six to eight years.
Rough Trade Records and Slam City Skates are
presenting a London Glen E Friedman exhibit to
commemorate their respective 20 and 10-year
anniversaries. GEF has been shooting skating in
Europe with his Zen Palette pro Ethan Fowler.
Another Friedman show is being hosted by
Russell Simmons Rush Foundation in NYC. On
the activism front, Glen is spearheading an effort
to force corporations to reveal what kind of milk
they use in the preparation of foods. Towards
this end, he is lobbying a number of national
political figures to enact legislation which will
mandate proper and accurate labeling
WILLIAM TELL ME ABOUT IT
Simon Woodstock and Salman Agah are
still fighting for ultimate supremacy in the
shoe biz.
Ever since Gotcha, the one-time much touted
line, was supposedly seen in the mass merchan
dizing black hole of Costco, are there any sur-
prises left? Certainly not Nike snowboards or
Variflex's new 40 inch longboard. On the
provocative tip, however, Paul Schmitt's been
seen riding an over cambered long cue lately.
This perhaps soon to be released product is
apparently designed to provide a controlled flex.
WHO CARES
Besides being interviewed by Surfer mag, is it
true that Tony Hawk has actually been doing
designer and art direction for them recently?
Scott Borne, onetime North Carolina resi-
dent turned SF stalwart, is promising to shoot
17th street hill in the city stripping as he drops
block by block. Would he in fact be "completely
nude by Castro" as claimed?
MORE MUCK
As previously noted, Ralf Middendorf has
been touring the US promoting Titus' four-page
"we were innocent" manifesto. Furthermore,
Middendorf is eager to show his video tape evi-
dence which he claims "proves that the securi-
ty guard did not initiate the antagonisms" at the
world fiasco. A more interesting video tape is
making the rounds in which Titus Dittman
speaking in German allegedly states that "he
banned the US and Brazilian skaters out of the
contest because of their poor attitudes."
Ron Whaley is out of skating with a badly
sprained ankle.
While doing a demo in Memphis, TN, the
Santa Cruz and Creature teams were thrown in
jail for about sixteen hours. During a demo for a
local shop in a location that was given permis-
sion to use, the overzealous Memphis police
decided to make an appearance. Richard Kirby.
Ron Whaley, Brian Childers, Ryan Aningalan.
Tony Tieu, Chet Childress, and about two hun-
dred spectators were all told to leave the
premises. Kirby jokingly mentioned the word
riot and that set the cops in a frenzy. First he
was taken in, and then Brian, Ron, and Cher
were for protesting The team van was impound-
ed and a total of $2000 in fines and lawyer
fees were paid. The shop owner took no blame.
The teams still managed to make it to their
demo in St Louis the next day and back to
Memphis for their court appearance followed by
a demo in Houston the day after.
