Formed in iggs in the New York metropolitan area, Dog
Eat Dog are: John Connor, vocals, Marc DeBacker, guitar:
Sean Kilkenny, guitar, Dave Neabore, bass, Brandon Finley,
drums; and Scott Mueller, saxophone
November 23, 1995, marked an impressive milestone in
Dog Eat Dog's flourishing career. That fateful day, when
they won 1995 Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the
European MTV Awards held in Paris, France, was the cul-
mination of years of hard work sculpting their indepen
dent, ever diverse signature, which blends elements of
hardcore, hip hop, metal, ska and rock. Indeed, the throng
of fans who snatched up DED's innovative full-length
debut, All Boro Kings, had sent an important message to
the world through their voices.
Now that the band has tasted global success with All
Boro Kings, which spawned the raucous rock-rap hit sin
gle "No Fronts," Dog Eat Dog have struck yet another
resounding note with their new effort, Play Games. Once
again, they've maintained their penchant for sonic experi-
mentation, revealing their talent to tap into disparate musi
cal forms and simultaneously take their own sound to a
continually higher plateau.
Over the course of eleven captivating songs, DED
weaves itself through a host of styles in their trademark
fashion, using its collective know-how to fuse it all
together for magnificent results. "Isms," Play Games' first
single, is a strong, highly evocative track espousing the
band's unilateral contempt for people who have societal
hang-ups. With driving horns and a catchy chorus, the
harmonious effect signifies the outfit's soulful essence.
Furthermore, "Rocky," a gritty, punk-inspired workout
fueled by raging full-on guitars, is balanced by hardcore
stormers such as "Bulletproof,"
which de glorifies the use
of guns. The whimsi-
cal "Getting
Live, is a semi-autobio-
graphical track about a rap
crew taking over the air-
waves of a CB radio channel
to do some damage on the
mic. Much to the truckers
chagrin, it features a spec--
tacular guest cameo by NYC
Dag cat Dag
rap crew, Roguish Armament
What's more, "Step Right In," the band's ominous-sound-
ing collaboration with the RZA (best known as the pro-
duction architect behind hip hop sensation Wu-Tang Clan)
is a fusion of the highest order. Expanding the album's
horizons even further, legendary rocker Ronnie James Dio
and New York sports broadcaster lan Eagle make cameo
appearances on "Games."
What songs off Play Games are videos?
Sean Kilkenny: "Is We just went to San Francisco to
shoot a video for "Rocky We did it with the same guy.
Michael Lucero. He did a lot of previous hip hop records
He also did our past four videos.
How did you and John meet?
We met through skateboarding. We've been skating
together for about eleven years now. I used to skate a lot
of vert back in the day like at The Playground in
Connecticut. We used to skate at jell Jones ramp down
South Jersey. He was a peo skater back in the day
Are things musically different in Europe compared to the US?
In Europe, the main music over there is dance/techne
stuff, so that's what mainstream is listening to Rands ke
Dog Eat Dog and Boohazard, they're not techno, they're a
little off the beaten path, and I think there are so many
people who hate that shit over there that they're dying to
get a hold of something ele
What do fans think Dog Eat Dog sound like?
It's weird when someone says we sound like Rage
Agamst The Machine. Maybe in the fact that we have rock
guitars and kind of hip hop style lyrics, but Rage Against
The Machine has one guitar and one singer. We have m
guitars, five guys who sing, and a saxophone. All the ele
iments are totally different. But, hey, they're great. I love
Rage. I listen to their records all the time. I guess
people just feel thes need to categorie music guess
it's in the same ve
Early New York hardcore influences can be heard in
your songs. What groups influenced you?
The first tour, when we went over to Europe in
April 9 with Biohazard my friend Paris, who played
gutar for the first two Cro-Mac records, played second
tar, because our other guitar player couldn't tour
because he's married and has a baby
now. So, we needed a fill in guitar play
er, and he was well
into it. See, Paris had given up
the guitar, he's playing bass in a couple other hands, but
when he came out and played guitar on our tour, that's
when he went home and talked to Harley Chassist for Cro
Mags) and started White Devil
Being able to play sold-out clubs and arenas must be like a
dream come true for a kid from New York
It's cool. Hopefully, it will keep going AC/DC is my all
time favorite band because of Angus Young I said. "That's
what I want to do So that's what I did. I went out and
got myself a Gibson SG guitar and practiced like a moth
erfucker, and now, years later, we won an MTV award.
Angus is probably the only guy that I would be stunned by
if I ever got to meet in person.
Who writes the lyrics?
John writes the bulk of them. We pretty much all con
tribute. That's the thing about our hand. It's like six pays
who have totally different influences, so when we get
together we all just put in our own Like I'm the metal on
so I write heavy guitar parts, John is into hip hop, the hass
player is into soundtracking music, and our drummer is an
old funk drummer from DC He used to play with Parliament
Funkadelic and Queen Latifah I wrote a couple of the song's
lyrics on the recent too. I don't even sing, but it's like who
ever comes sp with the idea that works the best
How did you get Dio on your record?
Well, we were writing "Games we had the whole
background verse going on, and John started doing pretty
much the same thing Doo was doing on the record, and
we started gooding and throwing around the name Dio, and
our ASR guy from Roadrunner heard it and he was like
"Let's try to get 000 so we made a couple phone calls
and he said, "Yeah, I'd love to He came to the studio
and hung out with in all day
What is your advice to our readers?
Just keep an open mind and don't ever say things can
not happen because things do I was one of those people
utting in my room saying "I wish Don't wish do it. If you
want to be in a bund, get some friends together and start a
band, because it can happen A year ago. two years ago we
were in a basement, now we're going to open up for KISS
which is the first record Fever owned. It can happen if you
make it happen
