An electrifying intensity
pervaded the Bill
Graham Civic Auditorium
In San Francisco, CA.
The assemblage in the
mosh pit, equally pos-
sessed by the powerful
energy occupied by the
spectacle onstage,
romped to the pogo-
Inducing punk Infused
with ska melodies
bestowed upon them.
John Feldmann, lead
vocals and quitar; Charlie
Paulson, guitar, Simon
Williams, bass; and
"Dangerous" Darrin
Pfeiffer, drums, of Los
Angeles based
Goldfinger are the
guys responsible.
After the band's forma-
tion two years ago, an
Ep release entitled
Richter, and a self-title
on Mojo Records, which
encompasses their
high-energy sound
found live, they are
currently on tour
again, headlining
several shows,
and opening up
for such
favorites as
Primus, Influ-
ences such
as the
Buzzcocks
and Bad
Religion,
as well
being on the bill for the
Sex Pistols' reunion tour.
But, even with such a
busy schedule, John and
Darrin were able to spare
a moment and give a
call from a distant truck.
stop as the band heads
for Atlanta, GA.
The release on Mojo is
their first
full-length
record and
is a compo-
sition of
"happy
music,"
as John
refers to
湯/
It, blended by a charm-
Ingly witty lyrical content
that mostly deals with
relationships with girls.
"When I'm in a relation-
ship, sometimes I get off
focus," says John.
"Sometimes I forget the
things that are really
Important. All I think
about is how I could
make the relationship
work, or this or that, and
I get all crazy. I haven't
been like that in a
while, but, when
we made that
record, I was
going
through a
really bad
break-up, so a
lot of the songs
came out of that
experience."
Fortunately, this is
one of those
Instances where
something good
transpired from a
bad situation
Goldfinger's
career is cata-
pulting in the
right direction,
and there is
no fear of
John veering
off the path.
"I believe
there's a
master plan
that's pretty
much out of
my control,
and that I've
Just got to
follow that
pton. I don't
know exactly what it is,
but, if [a relationship]
was meant to be, then.
But it's definitely not
going to happen right
now. This band is my
life, so it's a good thing
In not involved right
now, because it would
take away from what I
need to do."
As dedicated
as they are
to their music,
It isn't the only
thing that con-
sumes their attention.
Other Interests include
skateboarding, snow-
boarding and James
Bond flicks. To escape
the tedium present
between shows while on
tour, Darrin usually grabs
his axe and embarks on
a mission, scoping for
skate spots.
"Sometimes the clubs
will have a concrete or
hardwood floor, so I'll
skate around there, but
usually I go outside and
explore and sometimes
get lucky and find a rad
spot. Other times I just
cruise around. It's some-
thing that gets me out,
gets me moving. Me and
John are talking about
moving there [to San
Francisco]. There's rad
shit to skate in San.
Francisco.
And what type of skating
do they prefer? John: "I
love longboard ke
downhill and big fat
wheels" Darrin: I'm
Into olles and big stairs.
I love landing a big fat
ollie or sliding a handrail
or curb"
