Contests nowadays seem to have a
shelf life of about two years. They are
hot for a while, and then after
everyone has been there and
contests, ever. done that, the turnout and
Oceanside. The
only time San Diego
ever rocked is when
Nor-Cal invaded.

One hundred and twelve
entrants in three weeks

Tampa 1. Behind the back of the
industry and on his own, Brian
Schaefer threw a party and every-
one came. The course was kill, and
the skating was, too. A true skate-
boarding event.
8. Joe's Ramp Jam 1983. The first backyard blowout, on the kill ramp.
9. Upland Gold Cup 1980. Vert p
Vert gladiators conquest for death.
10. SF Streetstyle 1982. The birth of streetstyle as we know it.
11. Disco in Frisco 1988. Center stage at City Hall, San Francisco.
12. Alabama Slamma 1988. All the pros in neutral territory, indoors.
13. Devil's Pit 1982. Chaos with Cooksie ruling his home turf.
14. Honolulu 1989. Gonz kills braincells with 16 ft ramp to ramp jump.
15. Torquay Ramp Riot 1987. Beach, broads and boards all Down Under.
enthusiasm hit the wall. Over
the years we have critiqued, raged,
thrown, and seen them all. Here is a
brief list of some of the places, names,
and faces that will live in infamy.
Capitola Classic. Had one thing contests
all lack nowadays and that is downhill speed.
VA Beach. In the
land of the 700
Club, vert sol-
diers threw down
on one of the
first city-spon-
sored ramps in
the country.
Mile High. The
Terror in Tahoe was a
party and a blast in
the true sense of the
word. After the con-
test, the Dead Cat
toss into the pit was
the height of skater
improvisation.
Sacto 1. Skating
changed forever the
day that TG and Gonz
went head-to-head
for the first time as
professionals.
