            SNUFF
STORY BY
WEZ
LUNDRY
If I were to tell you that we're going to see
an English band with a drummer who is also
the singer, a trombone player named Dave
and a keyboard player who's been known to
wear green sports jackets, you'd most
likely piss and moan and tell me that you're
not into Phil Collins. Yeah? Piss off, git, we're
off to see Snuff...
I asked guitarist Loz what Snuff
had in common with the
aforementioned balding
British mellow-rock drum-
mer/singer: "Hopefully, as
little as possible... maybe
someone in the band is
getting as bald as 'im...
let's try to keep
away from that
comparison."
Keeping away
from that should be
no difficult task. Snuff
plays some
of the catchi-
est mod-influ-
enced punk you'll
ever run across, and they toss in their ver-
sions of some of the best covers known to
man, from TV advertisements to GBH to
mod-ska legends The Specials" "Do
Nothing." Some of it's so catchy, you forget
the breakneck speed at which some of the
songs are played.
Live, they know how to put on a
show. They recently toured the US and
Canada with NOFX, playing to the biggest
audiences they've seen in America.
Overcoming the language barrier and
exchanging banter in between songs with
the hordes of Yanks that've come to see
NOFX, it appears as though they are no
strangers to the big crowds. In fact, they're
not, 'cause they've played to huge festival-
sized crowds in Europe. As
usual, it's taken.
Americans a little
while to catch on, but hopefully their new LP
on Fat Wreck Chords entitled
Demmamussabebonk ("Imagine a Greek
landlord, in a strong Greek accent, trying to
say, "They must be bonkers,"" explains Loz)
will get them the wider exposure they
deserve. As for touring America so far, Loz
said, "Brilliant. Can't complain."
Snuff's been around, in one form
or another, for nearly ten years. After a few
line-up changes, it's solid now with Duncan,
Andy, Dave, Lee and Loz. They've put
records out on a few small labels such as K
Records from Olympia and their own label,
Ten Past Twelve. They also recently put out
an LP under a different name, Guns and
Wankers, also on Fat Wreck Chords. The
name just didn't stick, for obvious reasons.
As for me, I never thought I
would see the day I dig a punk band with a
trombone player. As for you, the skaters of
the world, Loz had a little bit of advice:
"Mind yer knees and protect yer elbows."
