reform school. Keep writing your
mag. It keeps me stoked when I'm
locked down. There's something
inside me that makes me skate. It's
a little monster trapped inside a
box, locked up in a dark corner of
my mind. When the box opens, it's
blinding. It makes me live on the
edge. My cells are dependent on
skateboarding like a junkie is
dependent on heroin. If I don't get
a regular fix, I get sick. Then that
locked up box becomes constant-
ly open, exposing me to constant
blinding light. My skateboard is
my shades, my needle to take
away the pain.
SPEED FREAKS

This town sucks. Besides the
obvious that they play Seal's great-
est hits over the loudspeaker dur-
ing every break at school (it has
something to do with reducing
violent tendencies). I guess that
explains why all the walls are two
shades lighter than piss after a
couple of Old Milwaukees. To
make things worse, there's no
place to skate. I don't think any-
body even skates in this town
anyway. However, there is no
shortage of skate apparel, and
from a glance the school has more
baggy pants than a rap concert.
This sucks! It was at that moment
that I decided, "What the hell?" I
won't let the non-agitating yellow
walls and mellow lighting stop me
from tearing up this shitty place.
It was a short roll to an untouched.
curb at the local Exxon, so I kicked
off and headed down to stick
some slappy grinds. Despite glares
from the attendant locked in his
booth, I pressed on, surf turning
onto the virgin ruby red curb.
Suddenly a Dodge squealed into
the parking lot. A bunch of jar-
head no-necks jumped out as they
tucked in their Polo shirts and
began to stare at my stylish turns.
"Skate or die, bro!" they shouted.
Before I could make a break for
the sidewalk, one approached me
and said, "We don't have too
many stunt wonders in this here
town." For some reason I won-
dered why they wasted time with
snide comments and weren't beat-
ing me to a pulp. But then I got
the surprise of my life. "Hey, bro,
we're going to do some hill bomb-
ing." I looked over and saw one of
the gang adjusting the trucks on a
state-of-the-art land luge. "Holy
shit, you guys skate? Alright, I'll
go." As we rode up, conversation
was muffled by mouths full of
chew and between spits I found
out that the boys were unem-
ployed dry wallers that now build
and sell land luges under the name
of Shred Sled. Very original, I
thought, and asked to use their
skate key to tighten down my
trucks. Seeing as how the grade
put a strain on the Dodge going
up, we were sure to fly on the
way down. I felt uneasy when we
got to the top and helmets and full
leathers were donned. 1, 2, 3, go.
It was an all-out race. I stayed with
the pack for about ten seconds
and then had to break into a
power slide to prevent the dread-
ed speed wobbles. As I slope
styled down the hill at great
speeds, the lugers ahead sweep-
ing smooth turns made me feel as
if I was back in SF again. Maybe
this town isn't so bad after all...
