            CURB
IT'S EASY TO RIP-OFF A SONG SOMEBODY ELSE
wrote but it's pretty hard to duplicate the real feeling
of the original. While too many US sugar pop bands
end up butchering old punk standbys because they can
never hope to write anything remotely on that level,
Ratos De Porão proves that the Brazilians know what's
really going down, Feijoada Acidente? captures all the
fury of tunes by Chaotic Disorder, The Saints, Poison
Idea, GBH, Rezillos, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Minor
Threat, The Vibrators, Dead Kennedys, Dead Boys
and Disorder... Smooth, well-lathered and freshly
painted, Curb is nice and smooth but definitely not too
slick. With Huntington Beach scene veterans Jeff Boz
and Donny Snell on strings and original DI drummer
John Knight, this is a band from the streets that knows
how to keep a beat... Not one to throw in with fake
MCs, Guru of GangStarr and Jazzmatazz has put out
a new compilation celebrating the renaissance of
Brooklyn and representing the spirit of the East New
York mentality. Il Kid Classics lays down the law with
tracks from Guru, MOP, Bahamadia, Big Shug, Group
Home and Jeru The Damaja combining with cuts from
new artists like True Master, Fabbidden Fruit, Stikken
Moov, and Operation Ratification... For pure unex-
purgated garage punk with a feeling. The Kindred
have it going on with Bomb Up The Town. Make your
local record store find it... Rare indeed is it to find a
whole CD of deluxe skank-o-matic rude boy rockers
that doesn't have at least one lame pop reject, but
such is the case with Open Season by The Stubborn
All-Stars. Though it's easy to point out there's plenty of
ska out there that doesn't quite make the grade, vocal-

ist Jeff Baker refuses to disrespect anyone else's
music. "I learned my lesson in the first interview I
did," he says. "I said something that I realized
later was really rude and I felt just horrible. A few
days later this guy heard our record and really
dug it"... Coming off six months of touring with
no arrests, fires or major thefts, 311 has estab-
lished a true grass roots following for its straight-
ahead punk music. Look for a tour with Cypress
Hill this spring... While others crumble into the
dust of jaded, faded old age, never to rekindle
the spirit of their bygone days, for Iggy Pop it
just keeps on going. Saying Naughty Little Dog-
gy is his greatest would surely cause a few bar-
room brawls, but it certainly shows that he hasn't
discarded the lessons of time.
