Time to turn away from the overly-dogmatized
world of punk rock, turn in your thinking cap
and settle down for a good time. Brothers and
sisters, it's time to move, it's time to get down
with it, it's time to sit back and get entertained,
to cut loose and not worry about how you look.
This band's always going to look way sharper
than you anyway.
Rocket From The Crypt's sound is a punk blast
that carries the energy of the MCS with a show
that's a spectacle to watch. Speedo, the lead
singer, gives a nod to rebel rock and rollers of
the 50s, with more than a hint of The King (The
hair! The moves! The look!).
Rocket has a quiver of releases, including a
10" and two LPs, and a Sound Machine tribute
5' record, this year alone. Sonic assaults, all of
them, but if you get the chance to check out a
show, that's the best circumstance...
I caught up to Speedo at a convenience store
somewhere between shows in Utah and Colo-
rado. He's buying lighters, because fire breath-
ing is the latest addition to the Rocket stage.
show, and I'm thinking, "Jeez, what a perfect
metaphor. When I recently saw Rocket, they
were fuckin' scorching.
Speaking of fire, the 10" they just put out is
called The State of Art is On Fire. So I asked
Speedo what it means: "It was just an innocent
observation. The title of that was not only in a
vague, roundabout way to condemn what we
see going on, but we also tried to make one of
the first punk rock concept records as well,
with all the songs being about things burning
and fire and different flames in general, in a very
non-Beavis and Butthead way, if that's even pos
sible in this day and age."
What exactly are they pissed off about? "Tons
of things make us mad, the things that make

anyone mad," says Speedo. "But we want to
have a positive effect on what's going on, so
instead of sitting around slagging everything,
we'd rather just write the rock and roll, go out
and play the shows. Go to the people and play
music for the people. That's pretty much what
we do, we're entertainers."
What makes their live show a "show" instead
of just another band playing? "We play a short
set, twenty-twenty-five minutes, but we try to
make the time we're up there count, instead of
just going through the motions. We go up there
and try to kick as much ass as possible. We do
put on a bit of a show. We realize there's a cer-
tain amount of entertainment involved. If you
don't want to play in front of people, you should
just stay home and practice all the time. When
you take it on the road, you play for people
every night, and you've got to give them their
money's worth."
