STABBED, BEATEN, BROKEN AND BLOODIED, Duane Peters has definitely paid his dues. He's invented
more tricks than he can remember and done things few will ever forget. To this day his style is unapologetically old
school, and you can bet he doesn't give two O'Henry's what anyone thinks.
Why are you so fucked up?
Why am I so fucked up? Because I watched
that Twilight Zone when I was skating Big O, and
that one said, "When you stop playing kick-the-
can, you get old and die." So I just keep playing.
What are some of the tricks that you've
invented over the years?
I don't even know. Maybe the sweeper, the
invert revert, the layback roll-out, I kind of bat-
tled with that one, because that whole trick
came when I told Eddie Elguera, remember his t
manager Sausage Man? I told him that I
was doing it, and next thing I knew, he had
Eddie doing them in the shallow end of
Upland, so I knew I had to start doing it in
the deep end. But that's the way it was
back then, everybody was out to steal
each other's tricks. Then I stole the acid
drop from Alva. He was doing it in the
shallow end of Marina Del Rey, and I start
ed doing it in the deep end, I did that at
Boulder. Between Salba, Olson and me, I
think a lot of slides were made up, and the
only slide that was worth a shit that Stacy
Peralta made up was the 540' slide, but
that thing was kind of beat, because it was
a drain trick, something that ended up at
the drain. We went skating at that MTV
thing this weekend, and there were some
good nowaday pool skaters. That kid Brian
Patch that was ripping. There was some
really good skating, not just kooks, like
with style and gnarly. So, I'm kind of out of
touch, I just skate for me. I'm pretty self-
centered. When it's time to skate, I try to
get out and skate just because I don't want
to go to the gym. I feel more like a whole
person when I'm skating, that's the reason
I'm still skating.
So you got stoked seeing those other
dudes skating?
Yeah, for the most part, it was pretty
neat, and they had some rollerskaters or
in-bladers or whatever they're called out
there that were kind of a drag. And then
MTV is a fuckin' drag, that whole shebang.
That Cortese goon, whatever, this guy's
asking people questions and then looking
up in the air, he didn't give a fuck about
anything, just that whole phoniness. That
was my first time ever even being around
any of that shit. And then on top of that,
there's no music playing, and it started out
kind of uptight, silence, everybody's seri- In the company of his close
ous. That's the only thing I miss, it's just a
lot of seriousness that's not really that nec-
essary. But everybody's at where they're at,
and I ain't out to earn points anymore, so
I don't have to be serious or any of that
shit with anybody. I did my time.
You've always been known for being
pretty anti-authoritative.
I still am, and that's all about punk rock
and not wanting to be an adult, that's all.
Just not wanting to be a suit or a responsi
ble adult. The whole trip scares the fuck
out of me, and I don't want anything to do
