DOWN THE RAIL COULD COST HIM
SAN LUIS OBISPO-Atascadero skate-
boarder Joey Pulsifer could hardly believe
the county wants to charge him with van-
dalism and sue him in small claims court.
Pulsifer, 19, said that he only skateboard-
ed once down the handrail at the County
Government Center and left as soon as a
deputy sheriff told him it was illegal.
But that one time was for an ad in the
July issue of Thrasher Magazine, a skate-
boarding publication that clearly shows
Pulsifer zooming over the government cen-
ter steps.
County General Services Department
Director Duane Leib saw the ad and mailed
letters Monday to Pulsifer and his mother,
Mary Manry, and to Maple Skateboards,
the San Diego company that ran the ad.
Each letter contains a detailed estimate
of why it will cost $545 to fix the railing and
asks both to pay for the repairs.
The ad shows Pulsifer, who is no longer
affiliated with Maple, in seven small photos
taken at the government center. He and
his skateboard leap through the air, ride
down the rail and hop off at the foot of the
stairs at the Monterey Street entrance to
the county building.
"Your photos are evidence that Joey
Pulsifer rode a skateboard on county prop-
erty and that he did so for your publica-
tion," Leib wrote Maple. "Therefore, your
business aided, abetted, encouraged and
advised his vandalism."
His letter noted that the area where the
photos were taken includes several "No
Skateboarding" signs. And he reported
that the government center has sustained
nearly $2,500 in "recent damage from
skateboard abuse."
