Surfing
Skate, surf, sand and sky all came together at
Zuma. Ben Pappas (left) intercepts a low-flying
Cessna with a tall 540: Chat Thomas (right) cleared
a collection of launchers. Frankie Hill (middle right)
was on the scene. Though he disappeared some
time before the finals, Christian Fletcher (bottom
right) put in some serious slashing on the waves.
Taking street to vert, Mike Crum (below) was on
it with the crooked grinds to fakie.
ZORCHED AT ZUMA
WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT ZUMA? Well, it was a rip-
off, that is about all I can say. The skaters' checks bounced
while the bikini contest flab got paid cash, the parking
lot was hella sandy, the waves were wimpy, and the vert
ramp was jacked. Things that happened on this blistering
weekend: Tas Pappas got an Australian-sized cherry on his
back after being warned about the Skate Professor's high
performance moto-board, Ben Pappas made three flip.
tricks in one run on vert, Monk Hubbard stole the amateur
show and cut with the winning snowboard right after the
results, the flippers were in the house and sagging, some
bronto-billies tuned on each others' heads over some spilt
Coors light, Ron Whaley, Mark Gonzales, Tim Brauch,
Eric Koston, Bobby Puleo, Greg Hunt, Joey Best and Mike
Carroll were all inspirational, some insane Samurai Warrior
nollied the Volcano of Doom and the only thing on everybody's mind after the show was
how they were going to make it to the Chocolate premiere. -Charlie Starkweather
