SEXISM IS JUST AS BAD AS RACISM only
it's more socially acceptable. So in the multi-
billion dollar rock 'n' roll world, girls show up
more often as drool objects than serious
players. Sure, there's bands like L7, Tsunami,
Scrawl, Slant Six, Seven Year Bitch and The
Muffs who throw down some hard rockin'
tunes, but they are the exception rather than
the rule. While some men are busy making
sex kittens of all women there are some fem
inist groups that blame all the dudes for
every problem they can think of. Taking it
all in stride, The Lunachicks provide an irrev
erent dose of crazy girl rock with their new
album Jerk of All Trades. Ask lead vocalist
Theo how the group feels about being
women in punk rock and she says, "We've
never been men, so we've just always been
ourselves. I love being in an all-girl band, but
Notes
it wasn't planned that way. We were
just all friends and all of our friends
were in bands, so we kinda started it
as like, 'Well, what the fuck?' And the
next thing we knew, we were a real
band. But it's hard too, because if
you're a guy in a band, you don't get
people going. "Show us your tits!" But
that's something we have to deal with.
While the Lunachicks frenzied din
sounds like no one, they do admit to
being influenced by Debbie Harry,
The Runaways, Suzy Quatro, and a lit-
tle bit of Nina Hagen and Diamanda
Galas Switching over to a trio of
dudes from Memphis who bang and
holler, we come now to The Oblivians
with a loud and hard slab of reverber-
ating cataclysm called Soul Food...
Skateboard master of yesteryear Ray
"Bones" Rodriguez is playing guitar in
a new outfit called The X-Members
with Gabby Gaberman from Cadillac
Tramps on vocals and Mike Tracy of
JFA on drums. Ray says he surfs, snow-
boards and skates now more than ever
... Meanwhile, Gabby also has another
group in a different vein called Manic
Hispanic, whose album, The Menudo
Incident, features Chicano remakes of
tunes by Black Flag, X, Wire, The
Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Damned,
Agent Orange, UXA and Buzzcocks
...After HR punched his manager and
his brother out in Canada, rumors
flew that The Bad Brains would not
finish the rest of The Beastie Boys
tour. However, when the show came
through Oakland, The Brains hit the
stage in full fury, wailing on classic
gnarlers and brand new broilers from
God of Love. The Beasties' DJ, Hurri
cane, busted the place up as well with
bombs from The Hurra, while The Boys
pulled off their inimitable rap, groove
and punk revue. -Brian Brannon
