THE AWFUL TRUTH
GRASS STAIN
A Leesburg, VA, man killed his
neighbor because of a dispute over
youths skateboarding in their quiet
subdivision, police said yesterday.
Robert Lorenz, 54, fatally shot
Duren Wayne Eldridge, 31, who lived
across the street, after a brief but
heated argument shortly after 6:30
pm, Sunday, said Leesburg police
Captain Michael J McVeigh.
Neighbors in the 300 block of
Lounsbury Court said the two men
were yelling at each other in the
street before taking their shouting
match to Lorenz's front porch. After
a few minutes, Lorenz went into his
house, slamming the door.
Eldridge began pounding on the
door. When Lorenz opened it, he held
a.38-caliber handgun and shot his
neighbor once in the chest, McVeigh
said. Eldridge died later that night at
Loudoun Hospital Center.
Other residents, several of whom
were drawn outside by the commo-
tion, said they thought the argument
resulted from a run-in Lorenz had with
several teenagers last week. The
youths, friends of Eldridge's 14-year-
old stepdaughter, apparently rode
their skateboards over Lorenz's lawn
and trampled his flower bed.
After confronting the youths, one
of whom reportedly swore at him, a
visibly irritated Lorenz called police to
the scene, neighbors said.
"He took care of his place pretty
well," said Bill Lambert, who lives
next door to Lorenz. "Those children
really upset him."
But tensions between the two men
had been high since Eldridge and his
family arrived on the quiet cul-de-sac
last summer, Lambert said.
On move-in day, Eldridge's two
dogs, a Doberman pinscher and a
Pomeranian, broke free and ran
through Lorenz's front yard, defecat-
ing on his flowers. Several months
later, trouble flared again after a visi-
tor to Eldridge's house failed to put
on his parking brake and his car rolled
into Lorenz's vehicle, Lambert said.
