THE JOCKS WHO punk out
today used to beat roof on
the punks of yesteryear. No
one knows this better than
Farside, the Orange County
melodocrunch outfit who has
a new 7" with a song called
"Lollapalooza" about testos-
terone pirates gone punk. "I
went to see Samiam and all
of these crazy ass jock dudes
were running around," says
bassist Bryan Chu. "And I
thought, Whatever...' but at
least their music is reaching a
wider audience." The Far-
side began in 1989 and saw
the rap group The Pharcyde
Three O
106 THRASHER
come up, but they're not at
all pissed about the nomen-
clatural similarities. Says Chu,
"One time we were playing
a show and all these dudes
cruised up and they're all,
'Yo, what's up? When's the
band going on?' And we're
like, 'Oh, you've got the
wrong band"... Only a real
bunch of fucked-up losers
would call themselves The
Presidents of the United
States of America, right?
Yeah, maybe, but besides
opening for Bill Clinton at a
Democratic rally, these Seat-
tlites also have a hella round
sound with former members
of Love Battery and Beck,
and guest guitar work by
Kim Thayil of Soundgarden
... Aside from slightly whiny
vocals, Claw Hammer's
Thank the Holder Uppers is
sheer pounding punk rocki-
tude... And then there's da
joint called Friday, a flick
written by Ice Cube, with
new thriller cuts by Dr Dre,
Cypress Hill, Tha Alkaholiks,
Scarface, Mack 10, E-A-Ski,
Bootsy Collins, Bernie Wor-
rell, Funkdoobiest, Isley
Brothers, Threat and 2 Live
Crew just to name a few...
Tommy Guerrero plays bass
in a trio called Three O. "It's
a non-threatening, non-veg-
etable, non-home appliance
name," he explains. An all
instrumental format gives
TG, guitarist Patrick Hooker,
and drummer Tim Dagaugh
room to expand and impro-
vise. "We like to see how far
we can go out without losing
it," Tommy says. "Besides,
it's hard to find a frontman
who doesn't have his head
up his ass." -Brian Brannon
