            WHIPS, CHAINSAWS, FIRE,
nudity, guns, electric guitars and
fowl mouth, anti-establishment
sensationalism are all a part of
the Jackyl experience. Their live
shows have been censored and
shut down, leaving the band in
the local jail and the fans pissed.
Jackyl is a gritty rock & roll band
from the remote South that con-
tinues to draw attention from
political conservatives who say the
group is too raunchy and too con-
troversial for the ears of today's
youth. Led by singer Jesse James
UDWIG
kyl
Dupree, a hyper Southern bump-
kin who's as ornery and outspoken
as his name implies, Jackyl has
jumped into hot water with just
two albums to its credit-Jacky!
and Push Comes to Shove
The quintet's raw energy and
searing desire to put on loud live
shows mixes well with the animat-
ed antics of Dupree, whose rap
sheet reads like a legendary rock
& roll rebel.
When K-Mart refused to carry
Jackyl's albums because of certain
"colorful" lyrics, the band drove a
flatbed truck into
their local Atlanta-
area store's parking
lot and gave an im-
promptu concert.
When Dupree's pref-
erence for leaving
the trap-drawer of
his union suit open
on stage resulted in
arrest for indecent exposure, he
defiantly appeared nude in a noto-
rious photo layout for Playgirl.
When the band refused to tone
down its live show, which includes
a chainsaw and 12-gauge shotgun
that's also a mic stand, one head-
liner booted them off their tour.
But being called rude, crude
and much worse only lights a fire
under these sometimes crazy,
sometimes angry southern boys.
Moreover, it makes for good
songs and inspirational live gigs.
"We are the alternative to the
alternative. Dupree says with a
good ole boy hoot and holler. "It's
not like our lyrics are complicated.
It's just basic, right out there in
front of you. And goddamn, it's
loud. And when you come to see
it live, goddamn it makes your
balls move 'cause there's so much
low-end crunching. And there's an
energy we go out and deliver
every night. And we work as hard,
if not harder, than any motherfuck-
ers that are out there these days.
There's not one night that people
come to see us that we don't have
our shit together enough to jam
until our backs break.
"And fuck these attitudes of
these bands that are all bummed
out about something. We think
rock & roll songs should be about
something in everyday life, things
you've got to deal with. Songs
should be about fucking and
drinking and smoking. And if
you're listening to the Jackyl
record, and you can't get into it
because it's not serious enough
for ya, well, you can put on "Dixie
Land" and listen to that, and if
that groove doesn't break your
neck, then maybe you need to go
see a damn doctor.
Dupree takes a lot of pride in
his band's choice of music, which
is designed to get audience mem-
bers to let their hair down and
stomp their feet. Push Comes to
Shove is a concrete
testament to the
band's no-holds-
barred, gunslinger
approach to rock &
roll. On stage, Dupree
is notorious for jump-
ing around like a
dervish, racing from
one end of the stage
to the other, gesturing
to girls in the audience, and often
showing his private parts.
One thing that has irked some
people is Dupree's display of the
Confederate flag. "It's just anoth-
er example that this society is way
over-sensitive, and turning into a
joke of itself." Dupree says. "I was
on the show Politically Incorrect
on cable and they brought the
question up about people in
Georgia wanting to take the rebel
flag off the Georgia flag. And he
came to me first to ask me about
that. And it's like I told him, I said,
'Man, as far as I'm concerned, it's
part of history. And you can look
at it just as positive as some peo-
ple are looking at it negative.' It's
part of the Georgia flag, and it
does mark an era of time that was
more than just slavery. Whoever
invented that goddamn flag didn't
get through and say, 'Goddamn,
this flag represents slavery!" The
rebel flag represents the Southern
United States! And the fact that
slaves existed at that time, that
was just the way it was, and they
didn't think about continued page 11
