Truly powerful punk isn't chore
ographed for video production. It
isn't force-fed down the throats of
hungry trendoids whining for the
next cool thing so they can run tell
all the other losers that they were
the first ones on their block into it.
Besides, kids like that would be too
afraid of a band like The Stitches
singing songs like "I Just Wanna
Fuck" on a split 7" single from their
West Coast tour with The United
Experiments of America and Cor
rupted Ideals. Talk about your seri-
ous hardcore due paying, De De
Troit and UXA are as tuff as ever,
playing the song "Power Supplies,"
with music written by Kent Sena-
tore, one of the dudes who carved
upside down lines in the Turning
Point adjustable pipe bowl. Of
course The Stitches feature burl
school skater Mike Lohrman on
vocals, churning up the brouhaha,
while Corrupted Ideals cover "Tele-
phone Numbers" by The UK Subs
... Descending upon American like
Mothra looking for a midnight
snack, The Ryders flew out from
Tokyo to wreak sure havoc at Holly-
wood's Coconut Teazer in a scorch
ing Ramones with Sid on vocal
duties in Japanese sort of vein...
HFL stands for Hard Fast and Loud.
and that's what the turbo-appoved
motor oil punk of Fix is all about.
Coming on strong out of Hunt-
ington Beach, CA, HFL severs the
strands of society to see the free-
dom of reality. Along come The
Bouncing Souls with The Good,
The Bad and The Argyle, showing
there's no need for pussy-footing
around with lyrics such as, "I like
your mom and it's no fad/I wanna
marrry her and be your dad." A
prime do-it-yourself, 1-2-3-4 type of
grind band, The Souls are so punk
they can almost get away with
doing covers of both "Candy"
pand "I Know What Boys Like"...
Fueled by a matter unknown, The
Chrome Cranks appear as a dot on
the horizon from out New York:
Dickter Scale
Pitch Shifter. The Remix War,

Therapy? and Gunshot in
aggrotech grudge match of

Econothugs
way and churn on through Your
Town, USA, creating a serious
delirious racket that expands with
the Doppler effect when they're
coming at ya and fades into the dis-
tance as they speed away... Full-
ahead rushing gorilla punk is where
The Econothugs are comin' from.
Whether they got some downers
and they're feelin' down, or they
got a 40-o in their hand and gonna
drive across this land, or they're on
a beer run baby-gotta get more
beer, or even if they got the bud
Shellae, at Action Park, LP.
Albini's new project amazes
and wondeful packaging to
boot... Laughing Hyenas.
Hard Times. CD. Heaps of
that Hyena's brand guitar
thickness and grouchy vocals
only Big John can supply...
Pond. t.b.a. CD. Hit Infested
classic for Portland's sons of
power popdom... Pet UFO.
Pigeon Heaven. 7". The title
that makes you really stoned, their
sound is thick, revving and clod-
dingly graceful. Mike Watt was
feeling a little confined playing in
the tight three-piece format of
firehose, so he got together with
pals Joe Baiza, Evan Dando, Flea,
Dave Grohl, Kris and Curt
Kirkwood, J Mascis, Kris
Noveselic, Spot and Bernie Wor-
roll, to name a few, and recorded
Ball-Hog or Tugboat? With a stellar
array of notables, Watt's bass ride
continuously thrills. -Brian Brannon
track is as punk as it comes
Today is the Day.
Willpower. CD. Clearly a band
of power mad fury and
intense control Spaze.
Dwarf Jester Rising, LP. Truly
the Bay Area kings of core
and they're not a bore so
don't be poor when you come
across this in the store...
Extreme Noise Terror. Retro
bution, CD. These English
vets of "name tells all are
back with a vengeance..
Clawhammer. Thank The
Holder Uppers. CD Ah yes, a
true ruck success story come
true and they've earned it
But really, this is a real gem
of rock history. The Chrome
Cranks, CD. Finally a full
length epic of bluesy Stooges
