called prejudice. I don't think that
I'm being out of line by bringing
this point to light because I've seen i
a lot of shit go down between
skaters and jocks. I've seen some
violence, and yes, it disturbs me,
but I don't start going off about
how "those fucking steroid-loaded
jocks always stir shit up," because
it's not always like that. Matt isn't
the only football player I've skated
with, either, and he probably won't
be the last. I hope that he's not.
Let's just see people as people, and
dickheads as dickheads.
you're not too tired to skate." Matt
usually only skates a couple times a
week with us, and it's always at
night. His football practice goes
until four or five, so we don't see
him much. We started skating
together in like seventh or eight
grade. We were both on the
wrestling team up until our junior
year in high school, and Matt has
always played football. I never had
a thing for team sports like football
or basketball, but you could call
Matt a real jock. I've always been
pretty disturbed whenever I read
shit about "jocks" in skateboard
magazines because more often
than not, it's something negative.
As a group of people,
skateboarders have adopt-
ed a style and a way of life
which is unique only to WEAT
skaters. It's a laid-back per
sonality with an open mind.
Some people call it "pro-
gressive," suggesting that a
skater doesn't judge anyone
on anything but their per-
sonality and attitude. That's
why I don't understand how.
someone can be judged as a
person, solely according to what
sport they play, or how they dress
If someone starts a fight at a party
because he's drunk, that person is a
total fuckhead. But I've never seen
Matt start a fight in his life, and he
is the biggest jock I know. I read
things in the mags like "a bunch of
jocks jumped us." "They're a bunch
of stupid jocks." What's the differ-
ence between saying "you stupid
jock" and saying "you stupid nig-
ger?" Both statements are loaded
generalizations. It's okay to stereo-
type a group of athletes, but if it's
someone else, like a racial minority
group, then it's

Chauvinist pigs, you called? Yes, I
am a girl skater. If you don't like it,
tough shit! Go and skate some-
where else. I like smashing stereo-
types and male egos. When I skate,
all their eyes light up and their
pants sure rise. To all the girls who
skate-we know where we stand.
To all guys-sure I'll skate with you,
but, "Ladies first!" There really are
a lot of girl skaters out there, in
the shadows of the guys, practicing
and waiting to come out. If they
choose to stay there, fuck 'em. I
choose to play with the boys. If you
don't like to watch me skate, close
your eyes and leave. When I skate,
most guys don't even see my tricks
'cause they don't look above my
chest. That's life. Pigs will be pigs
and jerks will be jerks. Live with it.
In closing, here's a poem: Trips

but they will never hurt me.
